There's no hard and fast rules for mushrooms, at least for the ones that grow in the US. My dad has been picking and eating wild mushrooms since dirt was invented, but he still tosses anything that doesn't look exactly like what he knows is safe.
Morels are supposed to be the one type of edible mushroom that you can't mistake.

I had some "hippy" looking people wanting to come in my horse pasture and pick some mushrooms. I ran them off.:p

There are mind altering 'shrooms that grow on the ground side of cow patties after a rain. I guess horse patties will grow the same 'shrooms thus the interest of the "hippy" people.

So if you see any flipped cow or horse patties someone might have been 'shrooming.:eek::D:D

This is another one of those, who tried this first? And why? Likely an example of how a little information can get you into trouble....

I would never pick mushrooms to eat. According to the books I have on the subject, even experts cannot tell the difference on some of them. They have to do a spore test to determine the difference. And, unless you test the whole lot even then you may get one that isn't good. Why take the chance? I like them but will not pick them and eat them. It seems that for the good ones there is a counterpart that looks identical, but fatal. Another thing, just because certain birds or squirrels, eat them is no guarantee that humans can consume them either.
Several years ago there were some Asian people near here who picked mushrooms and ate them, that LOOKED identical to some in their native land, and they died.
Some of those mushrooms have no known antidote for them and you DIE.
Unless your an expert, just buy them in the grocery stores.
Some of them, they don't call Deathcaps for no reason at all.
