I would never pick mushrooms to eat. According to the books I have on the subject, even experts cannot tell the difference on some of them. They have to do a spore test to determine the difference. And, unless you test the whole lot even then you may get one that isn't good. Why take the chance? I like them but will not pick them and eat them. It seems that for the good ones there is a counterpart that looks identical, but fatal. Another thing, just because certain birds or squirrels, eat them is no guarantee that humans can consume them either.
Several years ago there were some Asian people near here who picked mushrooms and ate them, that LOOKED identical to some in their native land, and they died.
Some of those mushrooms have no known antidote for them and you DIE.
Unless your an expert, just buy them in the grocery stores.
Some of them, they don't call Deathcaps for no reason at all.
