I dont have a mx5100 but it was on my short list... my L5740 is a fuel hog too in my opionion comparing the same work to my old mf35 its about twice the fuel burn for same tasks. I'm disapointedto say the least.

1-2 gallons an hour? Wow! Both my Kubotas are 2-3 hours per gallon and the old L3750 is a 5 cylinder and 3900 lb.

Gear drive here and usually not running over 2000 rpm. Could the high fuel usage of the MX5100 be a HST thing? Or do some of you have gear drive?

I ask because I'm going to replace the 3750 at some point with a larger machine.

I don't care about it too much now that I know about the error, but yes, when you consider the amount of engineering that went into the engine, transmission, or even the loader geometry, you'd think they could get the fuel gauge to read correctly.

I'll bet if you look at your tank it is an irregular shape which makes getting a totally accurate reading from a float type sender almost impossible.

I average 1-1.5 gallon per hour for overall usage. That includes everything from cutting grass and brush, pushing snow, moving dirt, grading, pulling logs, hauling firewood, pulling trailers etc...

I am rarely over 2k rpm unless running the pto. Mine is gear drive.

Thanks for the info! The MX5100 gear drive is one I'm considering.

The work that most folks do with a small tractor like the MX5100 of L5740 is really variable, so fuel consumption will vary.
When bush hogging, the grass isn't usually consistent thickness, when rototilling, there is generally a lot of stopping and starting, when doing loader work, it is generally not heavy load on the engine. It is no different than having an MPG range on a car. For $20 you can get a lot of work done.

heres something that i just thought of.if you want to know what it cost to run or how meny gal of fuel you use do this.take the gal you use in a day an devide by hours worked.then times the cost of diesel to gal used in an hour.i usually dont worry about how much fuel i burn.
