A few weeks ago I posted on here that I was a first time tractor buyer and I thought I had narrowed my choice down to the kubota 7040... Well after scratching my head for a few weeks I am now wondering if I need a tractor that big. I just purchased a small farm and need a tractor to maintain the property, plant food plots for hunting, and handle round bales on the loader as well as the 3 pt hitch. I have been looking at the MX5100 HST and really like it. Small enough to haul with my tundra to my hunting properties and I think strong enough to do all the things I need it to do. *Just wondering what you all think and wanted to hear from those with experience with the 5100 or similar size tractors. I can buy the 5100 HST and all the implements I need for a few thousand less than I can buy *just the 7040hd with loader. Any advice or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

It all depends on what implements you want to use with it. I have a 40hp NH and it has handled every round bale I've picked up with ease as well as my Bushhog SM 60 and 286.

A second thought for you is if you want ballast weight put a 3 point hitch bale spike on the rear and use a bale for rear ballast. The 5100 will handle it well. The loader will handle the weight just fine.

ok ive read though this whole thread of the OPs,so maybe i can put the doubts an fears to rest about the MX5100.i have the MX5100 HST 4x4 w/LA844 quick tatch loader.an use it all the time to move the big heavy 5 by 6 bales with no prob.the loader is stout enough to lift an move them all day long.now you do need a bale on the rear to safely move an handle the bales on front.i had the 3pt renovator on an picked up a bale with the loader,an it slammed the rear end around.but a 6ft shredder on the rear will be enough weight to stop that if your not putting a bale on the rear.the fel will be enough weight for heavy rear equipment.i leave the loader on at all times.

I'm not a Kubota guru so I just checked their website and correct me if I'm wrong but only the 7040 and com parables offer self leveling (it's hydraulic not mechanical) but I've found it an absolute must to have self leveling when handling bales.

The other thing is I would not get a HST farm tractor. Gear is the only way to go for a farm, you get more power. Real work is always done with a gear transmission. I have shuttle sync on my 5410 (JD) and a HST on my 3120 (JD as well) and although the HST is great for most stuff when you really need power nothing is better than gear (that's why you never see a 500HP with a HST). The are convenient, but I'll keep my gear for the farm.

I was working on my new (to me) flail mower today and decided I would take it out and sandblast it today since the weather was so nice. I had my 450lb stump bucket on and just hooked the 3pt mower hoop with the bucket and lifted it right up and took it out of the garage. The mower weight 1278lbs as per the manufacture and it was easily lifted a good ways out from the edge of the normal bucket (think the stump bucket is 42" front to back and I was only under the 3pt hitch loop on the mower about 6-8 inches.) Anyway, that should give you and idea about the lift of the tractor (I did have a 575lb grader blade/snow blade on the rear)

Thanks guys!! All of the responces have been extremely helpful. I called around today to a few dealers and priced the MX5100hst with la844 loader with quick coupler and R4 tires. I assume all were 2011 models. The lowest price that I got was $25,900. That was fully serviced, alcohol in rear tires, and delivered. I used the "build your kubota" option on the website and it came out to be $29,189. So the price I was given is roughly 11% off suggested price. Just wondering what you all thought of this price. I did not try to talk them down any because I usually dont like to do that until I have 100% decided that is what I want. Thanks again to everyone!! Your input has already saved me a lot of time in research.

That's not a bad price. See if you can get him to throw in quick attach and the HD round back bucket included in that price. The HD bucket is a good bit heavier than the standard bucket. The QA is really nice, too.

Good luck

Yep the heavy duty bucket is real nice!!! I ordered it and am glad I did. I want to say it is something like 200-300 extra.
Your price sounds pretty good, I added rear remotes and am very glad I did. It opened the door for several labor saving devices (front grapple, top/tilt) It is a bit expensive but the factory setup is very clean and neat.

Well, the OP stated, "just purchased a small farm and need a tractor to maintain the property, plant food plots for hunting, and handle round bales on the loader as well as the 3 pt hitch." That sounds like a pretty good application for an HST machine, wouldn't you think? If the primary job were tillage or other production ag work, sure, the gear machine is much preferred, but this sounds more like general chore work where HST is pretty darn good. You'd have to have one he__ of a lot of food plots before it would make any kind of difference what sort of drivetrain you had.

Regarding the "real work is always done" comment, that's a bit over the top. Just to illustrate, the entire Cat track loader line is HST, and we've probably all seen them do some pretty serious work at one time or another: Large Track Loaders from Caterpillar It's interesting to me that the track loaders are HST setups (lot's of back and forth) while the big dozers, etc., have direct drive power shifter drivetrains (absolute maximum efficiency and power). Not trying to start another endless HST vs. gear debate, but I think it's really misleading to leave the impression HST equipment can't do serious work, particularly in situations like the OP describes. Cheers.
