If temp gauge isn't getting past the indicator dot near the bottom (at a minimum) then probably running at higher RPM would help.

my wife's car has a service bulletin on it for the hose on the PCV freezing. The problem is the molded & shaped rubber hose collects condensation in a dip, which freezes, blocking the hose. The fix is to replace the molded hose with a regular bulk type rubber hose, and routed over the top of the engine so it has no dips.


So:
is it rubber? (can you squeeze it to find the frozen part)
are there any dips in what you think is freezing?
can you reroute to avoid dips?

And of course it was the coldest it has been here in the last couple years. I had the tractor out today and it was about 15 degrees out. No issues and it ran wonderfully. I guess the heated garage just moved up the wish list!

That's great advice. I haven't had a problem with the PVC on our M59 freezing....but as someone noted, PVC's are a new device in the tractor world and we haven't yet seen the whole range of winter weathers either. So more failures are likely.

Thanks to The Fred's for the picture posted in message #21. It shows the standard PVC hookup on his tractor and I can see that it doesn't have a dip in the hose....but what they've designed there looks to be a near perfect water vapor condenser with the PVC valve itself being the lowest point in the system. That's not so good.....

However, knowing about a problem and actually taking the time to fix it are surely two different things. This problem is simple and well-known to an earlier generation of mechanics. So the fix is easy enough. But knowing all that, I still haven't done anything about it on my own tractor. Has anyone? The most basic fix would be to remove the diaphram and spring from the PVC, reassemble PVC as a shell, run a hose DOWN from the PVC to a fabricated cannister*, and not forget to block off the port on the intake manifod. Agree?

* hmm.....rather than fabricate a canister....I remember that a variety of breather cannisters were standard on most older cars. Or maybe there is a universal one at the auto store? Or on Ebay?
