In 25 words or less: what is the difference in these two machines? Simple answers like "$5K" is not what I am looking for. I want to know how important the "deluxe" features are. Any insight will be appreciated.

5140: Hydraulic wet clutch, more hydraulic capacity, more 3pt capacity, longer, wider, longer wheelbase, larger wheels, almost 1,000 lbs heavier.

Now it's your turn. In 25 words or less, what do you plan to be doing with the tractor? :)

Rotary cutter to clip food plots, roads and levees. Maintain moist soil habitat. FEL for post-flood debris removal (1000 acres on Mississippi River) and manage deer stands. [oops! 27 words]

5100 might save you some $$$, but it's basically a smaller machine (that isn't bad if you need to get into tight spaces). 5100 is also available with hydro, which would be great for FEL work and the kind of mowing you describe (guessing it involves some back and forth work where the HST excels). Hydraulic shuttle on 5140 would be fine also. Can't go wrong with either one, IMHO. Got carried away with words... used up 2 days' worth here. :D

Both seem to be good choices with different features, I believe you can get HST on the MX. I would also look at the Grand L models; we have M and GL, both are really good machines.

The MX5100 is a "Grand L" platform/size machine. It is a no-frills (except now you can get it with the hydrostatic transmission) machine with no bells/whistles.

The M5140 is the first/smallest tractor in the M series. It is a real "M" tractor. (The MX5100 is really an "L" platform.) It is bigger and stronger. It also has many more options available.

You really have to get on Kubota.com and check them out to see all the differences. There are many specs that you can compare. Seeing them in person also is a must.

I have an M8540. On of my best friends has an MX5100. Both are good machines and both of us are very happy with our decisions.

We have both: MX5100 and M7040HD
Both are good machines. 5140 better for AG and bigger tillage jobs, can lift more.
5100 good all round machine for less money.

MX5100 as stated is a smaller tractor but will still pick up 1 ton on pallet forks. Good manuverability. Dry clutch manual shuttle works well for loader work. Plenty of power to run a 6-7' rotary cutter.

M7040HD hyd shuttle is nicer for loader work. More ag related features including draft control and more rugged 3pt hardware. Heavier machine both weight and construction wise. Greater lift capacities at 3pt and loader.
