Mike,
If you use the MX6 without the top link you should not have any problems. My first tractor & cutter set up was a Farmall H & a 6' Bush Hog. I mowed 10 acres with out any problem. If I remember right the H was rated at 25 hp.

1st, Hold off till the grass starts growing, before you buy.
2nd, If you let the pasture get a bit too tall, you won't have enough power and you'll have to cut with half the mower anyway.
3rd, If your dealer is nice enough to let you try one, why not try the LX6? Especially since you said pasture maintenance not brush cutting.

I don't recomend running without a top link. Too many times you need to raise the mower to overcome obstacles, mounds, little bunny rabbits, rocks, etc...I shred with one hand on the rockshaft lift lever almost always.

Mike, when are you going to try it? I really like the MX6 too, but I am being told that it is too heavy.(See post in Own-Oper."MX6 with 4400?")

Like you I am not that sold on the LX6, so I have been shopping around and these are the prices I have been given-

MX6-$1800
LX6-$1500 with slip-clutch and laminated tail-wheel.

SE6-$1200 with slip-clutch, laminated tail-wheel, and chain guards.
I know I know, it's a RHINO. However, it is slightly heavier than the LX6, it has a round blade holder(like the MX6), and I know that the 4400 will handle it. If it were green, it would be perfect.

There is a next to new MX6 in the local paper, and I need a newer cutter. So, I am anxious to hear the results of your test.

As for price, $1800 sounds about right. Paid $1730 (includes tax) 2-1/2 years ago

I use mine behind my JD 4600. Anything smaller than a 45XX I'd be concerned about not being able to
spread the 3 pt wide enough. Mine just clears ends of the pins when attaching. My MX6 came standard with
category 2 which I had the dealer change to category 1 pins. The manual (my version Nov99) states this
adapting only works on tractors that can be spread to category 2 width.

I looked at the MX6 for my JD 4400 and my dealer said no way and I agreed, it was way too big, especially for my hills I have to mow.

Mike,

I looked up several different places showing the MX6, they all show it be used with a 4500 or larger.

I tend to agree with other posts here, you may want to look into a smaller unit.

I called the dealer last night to order the LX6. So he is bringing an MX6 over to try (No that's not a MISTYPE) He really wants me to try it.

Now you guys think he is crazy, but he really is a stickler for safety and proper equipment care.

I spent the evening running all over my property looking for some horses I misplaced. When I found them I set down the 1800Lb bale I had hanging off the back. I won't say it handled like it wasn't there, but it never got squirrelly.

I figured I had better look at that in the manual, and I read the opposite:

<font color="green"> MX5 and MX6; Category 1 adaptable to category 2, 3-Point hitch.

NOTE: This adapting only works on tractor hitches that can be spread to category 2 width. (See your John Deere dealer for adapter kits.)

For category 2, a category 2 conversion kit is needed.

But then, Green manuals have been known to be twisted.

Thanks for all the replies. I know this ain't s'pposed to work. I normally wouldn't even try it. I may not. But if I do, I promise to tell all. Thanks again!! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

That's as clear as mud. So if you somehow have a category 2 hitch that won't spread to category 2 width you will have a problem otherwise you are ok?

I have one on order for my 990, hopefully that will work out. That isnt a Deere recommended config either. It should have enough HP and enough lift capacity but balance might be an issue. I plan on leaving on the loader with 4in1 when I use it. I figure I could probably get front weights if I needed them. I have no hills to deal with.

I bet that would make perfect sense it we saw the kit. It must add additional framework or something.

Point is, the kit is required to make the cat1 mower a cat2
