Coming along, will be interesting to see the head once you've reworked it.

The following are pictures of my Massey 135's Delco-Remy 12 volt generator after it was disassembled, cleaned, sandblasted, and painted. The armature's commutator was resurfaced using 400 grit emery cloth. Note that I sprayed the field coils and armature with special red insulating spray varnish designed for electric motor windings.

The original color of the generator was black, so that's the color I'm using for now. Later, if I find that I don't like it, it's easy enough to change. I'm still waiting for the parts (bearing, bushing, brushes) to arrive before it can be reassembled.

I don't know if I deserve such high praise, but I appreciate it very much. :)

i usually rebuild my oen gennies and such.. and I gotta say.. that looks nice. I know I've simply repaired them and slapped them together. and the odd few that do go to my rebuilder.. they don't even look that nice. :)

Well... I'm not sure how much progress I'll make over the weekend because I still need to buy some rather expensive tools that might have to wait until payday, but there are a number of tasks I'll be able to complete after I pick up my parts (over $800 worth) on Friday. Some tasks that come to mind are the steering box, generator, and oil pump. I can also complete the distributor after I find the right paint for the housing. Then there is the carburetor, but I still need to find the correct paint, in addition to ordering a gasket set for it.

Geesh, restoring an old tractor can really be a test of patience sometimes. :)

Thanks for the compliment. I think the main reason it looks so good is because I used brake cleaner to clean the field coils and armature before spraying them with insulating varnish. I was concerned that since they are somewhat exposed to the elements that the cotton and paper insulation separating the layers of windings could degrade due to their age. I'm still not certain if the black color will look right, but that's what the original color was underneath a thin layer of silver sprayed on by a previous owner in the past, so we'll see.

I think I've finally found the paint I'm going to use for the distributor and carburetor bodies. It's high-heat paint, but judging by pictures I've found online where people have used this paint, the color is exactly what I'm looking for. In fact, I may change my mind and paint the intake/exhaust manifold the same color, thus killing two birds with the same stone. I would have to cure (bake) that paint at much lower temperatures on the distributor and carburetor bodies, but that wouldn't present any problems.
