PT 425
Just had my local service, got a new battery, and was driving it and it suddenly went dead, cold dead. Battery is fine, but nothing happens when I try to start it. Could it be the ignition switch that went bad? Also, if the lights come on with out the tractor being turned on, then they don't...

HELP oh great ones !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is the PTO switch off? When this on on you cannot start the PT. Give me a call if you need help. I believe you have my number.
Oops, I am not a great one. Maybe I should not answer this. :D :D

Oh, it went dead while driving. Do your lights work with the key on? If not, check the fuse holder which comes off the starter. Wiggle it with the lights and key on and see if the lights turn on. This is just a guess of course. I had this fail at 400 hours.

The PTO is off and I was not using it at all when it died. I will check the fuse. One other detail. My wife says to did the same thing a few hours earlier and then it just started without doing anything other than trying again. And no, the lights do not come on with the key on. If it is the fuse (one can hope), do you remember what AMPS it is? Thank you "Oh one of the great ones...."

I think it's 30 amp. Check your cooling fan mine burned out at 275hrs and blew the fuse.

It just started again and I put it back in the shed. I did nothing but put the key in it....what does that tell me?

OK, Fan fuse looks fine. Ran it for about 4 minutes and the fan did not come on. Never paid any attention to it before, is that normal? If the fan does not cool it, is there a safety feature that shuts the tractor off somewhere else?

Short circuit or bad ground? Someone else (can't recall who) reported a similar problem a year or so ago. I'd trying searching the archives...

This sounds very similar to what happened to me when my ignition switch went out.

I kinda wonder what would happen if one passed alot of current thru part of the ignition switch, like say when replacing a battery, and causing things to heat up and melt so that not line up quite make good contact.

Thanks for the feedback....it works for now all by iteself. Now, my new Dixie Chopper (3 hours) is also just stopping. The last time I restarted it, flames came out of the exhaust!!!! Should I ask for a new one?
