I don't know what the official distance is, but in my case, I used a special box that the uninsulated pipe went into and then the insulated pipe went from there, through the insulation and out the roof. The box is in the ceiling, so when it's mounted, you just connect the pipes to the box.

Good Mornin Eddie,
Thanks !

Im thinking that if the insulated pipe is a foot below the finished ceiling, which will be 5/8" rated sheetrock, we should be OK. When fall comes I will test it, and monitor the heat. If it seems excessive I can fabricate a shield to diffuse the heat.

You dont remember by any chance the manufacturer of your setup do you?

Hope your doin well ! :)

Good Evenin Al and Cyril,
I appreciate your input, and the more I think of it, plastic conduit sounds like a good idea, even though its direct burial !

Hopefully by later june I can get the trench dug ansd install that feeder cable ! Im going on vacation next tuesday and will be gone 11 days so everything will be on hold for awhile ! ;)

running direct burial in conduit negates the benefit of direct burial, which is rapid heat dissipation. If you run in conduit you can no longer use it for rated amps, especially for a long (> 100 foot) run. Don't try and outsmart specifications.

Hi Scotty,

After a lot of searching, pricing and comparing, I went with what they sold at Lowes. It took them forever to special order what I needed, but I'm very pleased with what I got and what it cost. After two winters of burning just about every day, I don't have a single complaint.

We installed our pipe the way Eddie did with a ceiling transition box. This is a diagram that would show the way it was done, minus the second floor. DuraVent : Old Browser Notification It was a required item by code here which may not matter in your situation.

Good Afternoon Mark,
Thanks for that picture or diagram, it helps ! :)

Absolutely. But what is your rationale for this statement? Heat value per unit length would be the same. I understand the connection between heat and greater resistance per unit length. I gather youre saying the longer wire must be cooler to deliver the proper voltage at load. To many this will not be a straightforward deduction.

Good Afternoon Guys,
Finally got a chance to put up the sheetrock in the shop section... boy wouldnt want to do that for a living !
I built a 2ft by 8ft by 4 ft high scaffold for my friend who was kind enough to do the first layer of taping.

Another friend helped me put up the sheetrock, and I was lucky enough to borrow a lift, couldnt have done the ceiling without it !

Hoping to finish the sanding and compounding soon, then just paint and trim !:)

Good Mornin Guys,
I know its an old thread but just a bit of an update on the wht I managed to get done recently. Last summer I posted after having put up the sheetrock. Last fall I put a couple of coats of paint on the shop section and that was it.

Late last fall I got a load of rough sawn hemlock from the local sawmill, stacked and stickered it. Early spring I started
putting it up and just got it done. Last weekend I bought the rails and hardware for the sliding doors, put the two doors together and hung them. I still have to install the floor molding boards for the shop section and hang some shop lights and that will pretty much be it.

Kathleen and I are planning on putting on a family room and second floor bedroom onto the right side of the house next year, so I need to wrap this project up... ;):)

Some updated pics...
