Look pretty tasty, too...

I spent 4 weeks in Canberra a couple of years back, beautiful city. I really liked the Aussie culture, sort of a cross between the US and England (don't get mad at me!). The countryside is just beautiful, also. I drove around the coastal area south of the city and was very impressed with the scenery. Even hand fed and petted a wild kangaroo on one of the beaches! (Yeah, I know... Stupid tourist... :D)

Thank you Rox. Thats quite a compliment from someone living in Provence. We've had a checkered history with olives over here. We now have a lot of wild olive trees in the foothills. I've got 3 or 4 in my front yard. (Along with the koalas).

And one more beach shot. Its about 13ks along the beach to the shops. As you get near the town at the other end of the bay its just about bumper to bumper by our standards!

Now I better stop posting pics that dont show tractors or I'm gonna get kicked off this forum!

That's pretty amazing, koala bears right in your front yard. Is it true koala bears smell like cough drops (from eating eucalyptus leaves)?

BTDT. I dont know. I've never noticed the smell of 'Vicks Vapour-Rub' in the air. (Do you have that stuff?). But I guess its possible. Virtually all their water comes from gum leaves. They're usually too high to get a good sniff but I'll try harder next time! These Koalas arent in gum trees of course. If they get spooked while they're moving to a new tree they'll just clamber up the closest tree and snooze for the rest of the day. Then they move on at nightfall.

VABlue. You spent 4 weeks in Canberra! Who did you upset to deserve that? But seriously, I hear its a very interesting place. I've never been there myself. Its the public service capital of Australia you know. Lots of money. lots of bureaucrats, very clean and tidy, a world of its own. I'd like to go one day to see how the other half lives. ;)

And a cross between the US and the UK? I'm certainly not offended, but i think we're a lot more relaxed than either. Then again you were in Canberra. They'd be pretty straight there I reckon!

That is so facinating that you have koal bears jsut around you. And seriously there are no roads? You all jsut literally drive on the beach?

How is the litter situation there. Are people pretty good about not leaving their trash behind them? Actually what do you do about trash? Does a big garbage truck drive down the beach also? Honestly what you are posting is very unique and far away removed form anything I have ever seen. Thank you so much for sharing.

Thanks for your interest. As you say, we are 'far removed' down here. Its certainly not over-crowded. But we have plenty of bitumen roads going wherever you want to go. But around this area we are lucky enough to still be able to drive on the beach. People come a long way to do that. They love it. Weather permitting, you can drive on the beach here for about 150 ks in both directions. You need a 4x4 of course. But the garbage trucks use the proper roads. Its very clean I think. Most people are pretty good about that kind of thing nowadays. We have fines for littering. And we have a 5c refund system for all bottles and cans so overall theres very little trash around.

I was standing up a new system your gov't bought from us. Thanks for the Aussie vacation!!! I was impressed with how clean the city is and the designed layout. Everyone is very friendly and laid back, as you say. My comparison does sound odd... The wide roads and American styled news and TV shows combined with the British type pubs, restaraunts, and TINY parking spaces. I was there during the summer Olympics and one TV station showed 'The Simpson's' cartoon 24/7. Quite entertaining... I liked it there and look forward to going back.

Nice Kubota... (Don't want you kicked out:D)
