My brother just bought a Mitsubishi d2500

This morning my brother went and bought a Mitsubishi d2500 tractor and when he went to getting the implements on the trailer the steering went out. This one does not have rack and pinion he said I wasn't there it has a gearbox. The people he bought it from do not know what year it was made. That's all the details I have. Does anybody have any idea what to look at first?
