Approaching traffic here in the southeast will pull off to their the side road to let a funeral procession pass. Police and sheriff’s escort the procession to the cemetery and will leapfrog ahead to block crossing intersections. Law enforcement will handoff to other jurisdictions as they cross lines. Someone tried to pass us on a four lane highway after my mom’s funeral, a deputy nailed his butt.

We did a video and had pictures at my FIL funeral.
From his childhood, military time and with his kids and my son included.

It's pretty much the same law in NC (always considered NC a part of the South East).

Honestly, I would not pass due to respect and it's not like you have to deal with them regularly (funeral processions), but stopping "out of respect" when you're coming the opposite direction in another lane is pushing stupid due to the chance of causing an accident.

Yes, I understand the intention, but disagree with the action. Anytime someone does something unexpected in traffic, like stopping in the middle of a lane, or pulling halfway off the road, it makes for more likely hood of an accident because now you're focused on the car in front of you doing the unexpected and not seeing what's going on around you.

Anyhow. I try and roll with the flow of traffic.

A little bit of dark humor here, but when I was in the funeral procession for my grandmother, an entire OTHER funeral procession passed us and got to the very same cemetery before us. I could not find the right emotion at the time as to if this was rude, or if it was darkly funny that the processions were, sort of, in a race, to get the best parking?

How long would that take? And I assume you had no police escorts, otherwise I would have hoped the lead car in the other funeral procession should have been ticketed.

Would have been funny if the rear cars in your funeral procession could have blocked the other funeral procession from passsing. :ROFLMAO:

I wonder if there was a back story there - Maybe they were friends and one was always late, or rivals?

this brings to mind the saying :

"Hurry up and die"

My Dad has dementia and Alzheimer's, so my Mom is trying to make all the decisions, but she's overwhelmed. I'm trying to help her as much as I can, but also trying to figure out what our options are. She does not want the land, but would like me to buy it if I can. I don't want it either, but for what he owes on it, and what I think it might be worth in a decade or two, it would be silly not to try to buy it.

My brother was licensed to raise mallard ducks and pheasants. They have lived their life in a large pen that allows them to fly, but never develop any skills to survive on their own. The few that have escaped always try to get back in. This will last until they die from predators, or they die on the netting. If I let them go, I believe they will just die.

There isn't much to steal, or vandalize. The house isn't livable and probably contributed to his health issues. Nobody can damage it any worse then it already is. I'm just going to knock it down.

The shop is just a 30x40 metal building. No windows, just a sliding door and walk through door. The neighbors watch it pretty good and it's on a dead end road that doesn't get any traffic. I was nervous when he first passed, but not so much any more. Now I'm more focused on his animals.
Brother I hate trying to give legal advice, and I don't like that people are always worried about lawsuits. That said, if you are or intend to be in the chain of possession of his place, make damn sure you have liability insurance in excess of any possible expense. Sounds like a great place for a slip and fall..........

Best,

ed

This clip from Dave Allen might just supply the answer as to why they did it. Worth watching the whole lot, but the scene in question is from about 8min35secs to a bit after 12 mins

I'm a transplant to SE Tennessee from Arizona. First time cars stopped in front of me on a 4 lane highway with left turn lane for a procession going the opposite direction, I about crapped my pants.
Still can't get used to it after 6 years. BTW MossRoad, I grew up in N.L.. Close to you.

Having been raised in a Funeral Home,.... I can say that the best funerals, are the ones that you make, and don't let the Funeral Director lead you into anything you don't want. It can be a nasty profession, with up-selling. So my Will has provisions in it, so that things are done on the cheaper side. They are not legally binding, but do give direction to the survivors as how I want them to deal with it, with as little fuss as possible. :)

I'm sure you've read The American Way of Death by Julia [oops, 'Jessica'] Mitford. She wasn't complimentary.

When her own mother passed she put Mom in the car and drove to the crematorium. I think as her mother had directed. About as DIY as you can get!

Mitford was a friend of my elderly aunt who lived to 107 so we heard about her from time to time. What she had written wasn't forgotten in this family.

Yes, I've read Julia Mitford. If i was to write a book, memoir, it would be far more revealing than that. We as young children would huff the smelling salts. :) But its all good, and most people don't have to know about it anyway. Like, walk away from the entire system and do your own.
Once being a child, there was a skirted carriage, around a coffin. an under carriage of the trolley of the coffin, that I hid under for an entire Ceremony. Everyone left for a moment, and I escaped undetected. The fact that a dead body was over me, was entirely inconsequential. We always had dead bodies in the morgue. God didn't see me there.

What I was being taught, to do as an apprentice undertaker, I would not wish on any one, as to the full body preserved type of funeral. I can only say it is... I'm lost for a word here, in the ways the undertaker has to work to make a body presentable for a viewing,.... are things, you don't know, and should never know. So I'm going to be cremated with out a viewing.
