<font color="red">"Do you profile??????" </font>

Every person profiles in one way or another, cop or not.
That's how stereotypes are made.
I base some of my decisions on past numbers crunching.
Take me running radar for example:
I've probably wrtten over 1500 tickets for speeding. Based on MY observation of the AVERAGE person speeding from MY tickets -- females speed the most (or at least get caught the most). Men get caught for going the fastest out of a given range of tickets. You could blindfold me, and from the tone of the radar, I could guess correctly the sex of the speeder 80% of the time. I'm sure Bird and Rdam and F350Lawman could give you similar averages.

Having driven through NC, I know that it isn't the place to speed unless you have a NC license plate. The last time that I went through there, I was stopped for going 5 mph over the speed limit in the right hand lane and the cars were passing me in the 2 left lanes going much faster. There wasn't a car in front of me for at least 3/4 mile, so there was no possibility that I would be running into the rear of another car. Did it matter? No... did I get the ticket, NO, but that is another story... Professional courtesy after the stop. It was the stop itself that annoyed me. Were the other cars going too fast for the trooper to catch them? /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Profiling for certain.... "out of state plates". /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

</font><font color="blue" class="small">( That sounds very odd. Almost impossible. I have a friend that is very knowledgeable about phone systems and I will ask him how this is possible )</font>

I work on switching equipment and you can send whatever you want. It depends on what switching equipment you have and the service from the telco. I can make up a number assign it to a line and that is what is sent. That would be more trouble than its worth though.

There are different ways of doing this with software and number assignments. For example A PBX or switch with an ISDN line. The originating number is sent in the layer 3 message. You could change this message or you can change the caller information that is sent. Caller ID doesn't mean you have to sent the originating number.

I don't want to get into much detail other than to say yes it can be done and I could do it as well.

So how hard would it be to do it for each number you called? Or do you think it was a fluke? Just curious.

Most of the calls are actually placed by computer dialing equipment, which obviously knows the number it is calling, so it sounds as if with the right equipment, the computer can also feed the called number into the system to make it show up on your phone, rather than a blank. A lot of people would be as curious as PineRidge to pick it up and see how it could happen.

Well, I guess it is more common than I thought... I did an internet search for "caller id spoofing" and got a bazillion hits. Interesting reading, to say the least.
