I talked to one of my cousins the other day. He is in his seventies and in bad health. He retold this story and I thought the people here would enjoy it. This took place in the late forties.
My cousin was eight or nine years old when he walked the two miles to the local country store. It was in the middle of the summer and it was hot and the gravel road was dusty. Suddenly a large new car slid to a stop beside him. "Get in and we'll give you a ride," said the man in the back seat. My cousin knew who the man offering the ride was and his reputation. Everybody knew how the guy had made his money robbing banks 'up north', but it was hot and he was tired and he crawled into the car. The back had two bench seats facing each other. There was a man driving that he didn't know and two or three women in the back with the bank robber. They rode along for a quarter mile of so with the bank robber making small talk.
"Tell you what James," he said to my cousin. "You see this silver dollar." And he took the coin out and spun it around in the palm of his hand. "Show me and these ladies your pecker and if I like it I'll give this to you!"
James said he looked at that silver dollar, looked at the man, looked at the women, and looked back at the dollar. My cousin said that was more money than he had ever held in his hand at one time.
Slowly, unable to help himself, he unzipped his pants and pulled it out. The man and all the women leaned forward to look at it.
"Naw," said the robber, "I don't like it." And he opened the door, grabbed my cousin, and threw him out without stopping the car. James said he heard the women laughing as they drove off.
True story. Had it verified by his brother-in-law who was kin to the bank robber. He got a big kick telling what he had done. The robber got caught a few years later and served several years in prison. I was friends with one of his daughters (my dad said, "boy you are crazy, that s.o.b. will shoot you).
