My dear old dad's JD 4300 has some issues

As an FYI, most of the issues you guys have suggested would prevent the starter from turning, but would not prevent the lights or flashers from coming on.

True but he may have compound problems. I saw where you and others made some good suggestions about trouble shooting the electricals.

when ya turn the key, due you hear a "click" or like coming from the solenoid on the starter motor?

I had the same issue with my 4300. It would crank but not start. I was not hearing the " click" it was a relay in the fuse panel. My friend who is a tractor mechanic by trade figured it out. He told me to alway listen for the click when i first turn the key.
