hey i really like your set up so much i'm trying to make a similar one. i would like to know if the cap needs to be vented or non-vented and do you use a grounding clip because of "static electricity" would that be a necessary concern,also if i needed to use a cut of diesel fuel hose does it have to be of the anti-static type, also did you use pipe dope instead of teflon tape. thanks for any help you can give me. rich.

Just noticed this - don't know if anyone ever commented on it.

A quick look at the photo reminds me that I used 3/4" X Close nipples and one 3/4 X 1" nipple connected to the 3/4" union. Use as many 90 degree Street Elbows as possible to eliminate another nipple (Street Elbows have one end threaded). All materials I picked up at Lowe's or Home Depot. I like the looks of Galvanized better than black iron, but either will do.

Not really .... galvanized pipe should never be used in plumbing used for diesel fuel storage:

"Do not store diesel fuel in galvanized containers because the fuel may dissolve the zinc coating, which can then remain in solution until deposited in the pump or injectors."

Gravity is free and totally reliable but... if you are trying for NASCAR pit stop refueling speeds then you need to spend the BIG BUCKS for a HD high volume pump.

A consideration often overlooked in low dollar low tech installations is hose size. Gravity is free and reliable but not fast when using hoses sized for pumps. To avoid frustration use fittings and hoses considerably larger in diameter than typically used for pumped systems.

If your situation allows it go for more height in the storage tank. You get almost 1/2 of a PSI per foot of elevation. Also avoid sharp bends in the hose. Avoid elbows if at all possible. Use larger ID hose, reducing down just immediately prior to attaching the nozzle if you use one and it requires smaller diameter connection.

Consider a water separating filter with water drain petcock. Check the filter frequently since as it plugs up it will really slow down fuel delivery.

1*The filler cap is vented on each drum. You can see one of them rite under the 2008 date in the photo.
2*No.
3*I'd be concerned if it was gasoline but since it's diesel no.

4*I just used 1/2 or 5/8 fuel hose purchased at an auto parts store.
One problem i ran into with the ready made hoses from TSC and Northern tool is they only come in 10 and 12 foot lengths.

My long hoses are 14 to 16 feet so their hoses were to short.
My short hoses are 2 to 6 feet so their hoses were to long. The second problem is their hoses only came in 3/4 and 1 inch diameter which made them stiffer bulkier and clumsier to handle and wind than my 1/2 and 5/8.
