My dilemma – the in-laws

"The best piece of furniture to ensure this is to have a sofa bed."

"Naaaahhhh! The BEST piece of furniture to ensure this is a Futon! "

I must be extremely fortunate to have wonderful inlaws including BIL and SIL. We live 6hrs away from the rest of the family. To accomodate their visits we have a full size sofa bed, a queen size sofa bed and a very nice futon.

We have personally, ahem.... "tested" ... them all. And the futon is by far the most comfortable!

Hmmm?/w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif First, I'm not going any further into asking about "tested". That might provide more information than I ever wanted to know! /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Second, a comfortable futon?? /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif/w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif I've used a number of different futons, and I would've compared them to a worn out old Army cot. /w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif Maybe this is one of those regional things? /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

I certainly feel your pain Danny!!! My wife's in-laws are like Harv described only it's both of them. Everytime they come to visit they get my wife so shook up it is weeks before and after before she gets back to normal. It does take a real toll on your marriage for sure. I finally got to the point where enough was enough like Harv. I said I can't stop them from visiting but if they come out they stay in a hotel. Unlike Harv's in-laws they won't pay for it but at least it has calmed things down at our house. They don't come out near as often anymore.

I think your wife needs to realize that it is you and your family that needs to be happy first and then think about the in-laws. When we were having the trouble our pastor even told my wife that it was not healthy what was going on and that there needed to be a solution. Good luck to you I know it's a tough, tough situation.

Well, there is some good news in all this. They decided to arrive today instead of yesterday for Memorial Day weekend. If it doesn't rain too much, I've got lots of bush hogging to do, plus I'm just now getting to the garden since it's been so wet, so that stuff should keep me out of the house for a while!

Best of luck to you Danny. Don't forget to change the oil in your tractor, grease all the fittings on all of your implements, plus sharpen all your blades on your mowers, etc...

Playing the avoid-em game with the in-laws is about the only fun thing to do with them (I envy the few of you out there that actually have great in-laws). My in-laws live 7 miles away, and I can usually work it where I only have to see them 4-5 times a year (even that's too much). I won't even start into my wife's 13 other siblings.

I guess I feel that I should say something on behalf of all of the good in-laws that are out there!

My in-laws are great! They live about 6 blocks from us, but unless we call them, or they call us to see if they can stop by, we don't see them at all. Don't get me wrong - I'd love to see them more. I'm usually the one that suggests that we invite them for dinner or invite them along on an activity. I really enjoy spending time with them.

One reason I think it's this way is because I lost both of my parents before I was married. My in-laws have made it very clear that I am their son, and that's a good thing! (Oh no - I said a Martha thing /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif).

Another reason is because they truly appreciate anything that I do for them. My father in-laws idea of a tool box is something that has (these are his words now!) "a puller, a pounder, and a cutter"./w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif He's not the handiest guy in the world - but he sure knows how to keep the beer flowing! /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

I guess I'm very fortunate to have in-laws like this, and I hope that those of you that have less than pleasant situations with your in-laws will be able to see improvements in the relationship. One thing that I've learned over the years is that no one can have enough family! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Yeah, Garry, I'm with you; never had those in-law problems. Five months after we got married, over 37 years ago, my parents moved from Texas to Alaska, and her parents were in West Virginia, so we'd been married a year and a half and had a baby before I even met her parents. And for many years we usually saw her parents once a year; mine twice in 7 years, and regretted the fact that we couldn't get together more often because we all got along great and enjoyed each other's company for as long as possible as often as possible.

Bird,

You don't think that had anything to do with the fact that they didn't live close to you and you didn't see them "too much"? /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif You know what they say about "absence makes the heart grow fonder"...../w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Sure hope that was no reflection on your new bride, Bird. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Somehow it doesn't surprise me that you come from nice folks.
