My dog won

While driving the tractor thru a field today, the dog cornered a groundhog. She was so proud of her catch.

That's a pretty cool picture. It looks like the groundhog is pissed and the dog is happy. I wonder how close to the truth I am? LOL

Groundhogs are a handful for a dog that doesn't know how to handle them. I've had a few beagles seriously cut up by groundhogs.

We have a border collie mutt who is able to dispense of a groundhog very quickly.

We don't have groundhogs around here, but my dog hunts squirrels instead. The first time he latched onto one, it turned around and bit onto his lip. He tried shaking it off but the squirrel hung on. He got a little bloody. Since then, my dog has learned to do the "fast crunch".

Reminds me of one morning walking our Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier and Giant Schnauzer. The SCWT spotted a ground hog and true to her terrier breeding went after it. Some how the groundhog got his upper front teeth caught in the metal loop on her collar. About that time the GS decided to join in and got the GH by the tail. So there they were the SCWT trying to back away, the GH hooked on the collar and the GS pulling his tail in the opposite diretion. Eventualy they got untangled and the SCWT finished the job.

we had a pair of mutts one was a doberman/blue tick mix, the other a long leg beagle lasaopso mix. Rex the dobbie mix could catch/corner them then the beagle mix would catch up & GRAB the chuck in the rear. rex then would grab them from the back cruch crunch and dead....

this was 20 years ago now... the were good hunters..

She caught the ground hog, shook it good, and then carried it to the yard where my son was mowing. She then dropped it, and it wasn't dead yet when my son took this picture. It's back legs were broken, so couldn't run away. She finished killing it after this picture was taken, then I scooped it up with the loader and disposed of it.
Yes, they are out in the daytime, and yes, it was pissed. I have one living right under my shed that has really made a mess. I hope she gets one of them.

Here's another critter I had in the field this winter.

Buckeye...That's a nice grey fox. I like having them around and seeing them. The coyotes have taken over and have about wiped them out around here. I have not seen one in about 3 years.

Neat picture. I've had a bunch of dogs going all the way back to childhood, but never met a dog that was on the hunt 24 / 7 till my wife and I got our Golden Retriever. Heck, I've seen him chase off a moose. What impressed me the most is the way he handles snakes. He grabs them and in a split second shakes the bejeezus out of them, lets go and flings them through the air. Then, before they can get their wits about them he repeats the process till dead. Similar for woodchucks and such..... but with snakes its at a much more furious pace. :confused2:


Oh yeah..... he's been skunked good a coupla times.

I don't think my dogs were ever more alive than when they were hunting ground hogs. If you really want to see what a dog is watch it hunt.
