If you can't find washing soda, sodium carbonate for pools is the same thing. Might have to check the concentration. Called PH UP, it might be cheaper for big jobs.

Sea going ships use something that can be loosely translated as a "victim anode"
The salty sea water creates a galvanic environment, which means that the brass propulsion screws get eaten away in sea water due to small electrical currents from the hull to the screw.

To prevent this, they place this victim anode on the boat under the water line near the screws. the victim anode is an alloy of zinc, and i think tin. (not sure about the tin, might be lead as well)
The effect is that the galvanic corrosion works on the weakest material, which is the victim anode. The zinc plate gets eaten away and the brass screw survives.

After seeing the GREAT result on the post hole digger, i want my own de rusting rig.
after you took it out of the bath, it still looked dirty to me, but after pressure washing, the iron looks like fresh manufactured steel :)

I see you use 3 rods of rebar, to attack the PHD from all directions in the bath ?

Thanks. I smile every time I see it. I showed pics of it to my uncle and he couldn't believe what a restoration job I did.

Pressure washer is one way to clean up the pieces. Another method is to let it dry and hit it with a wire wheel grinder set up. It doesn't take much pressure or time. Pressure washer gets into all the corners and doesn't make a dust cloud.

The rebar.... I read somewhere that the electron will follow the path of least resistance - so surround the item with rebar (or scrap iron) so the electrons will come off of all surfaces of the piece and not just what is near the rebar. Does that make sense?
