Depends on where you're doing the "plinking", and at what. As mentioned by many others, a Ruger 10/22 is reliable, and used ones plus parts are readily available. Now, a .177 with at least 1000fps of "oomph" is the ticket for small tasks around the house when noise is not appreciated - such as when my wife graduated from "aren't all those squirrels cute" to "they're always on the bird feeder or digging in my flower pots"

I dropped a Bausch&Lomb 4-12 w/40mm adjustable objective on my Remington 541S (22LR). The 541S is a fairly large 22 so it makes a nice full-sized combo, great in the squirrel woods or at the bench.

I have seen people put big dollar scopes on inexpensive rifles and just the opposite. This 917VS begs for a good scope. Good--not super fantastic costing oodles of money but a good scope. I have had good luck with my Swift Optics 4X12 on my Hornet but that gun also begs for more scope magnification. I am considering another Swift or a BSA optics Sweet 17 in the 6X18 for the Marlin. The scope I have on it now was just temporary and is only an old 8 power B&L. It works but it is not what this rifle needs. These 17s will shoot through the same hole at 100 yards and it is a tiney hole. I have heard mixed reviews on the BSA scopes but I am going to try one. The Sweet 17s have a bullet drop calibration built in which might be nice for the little round.
Hornady will be offereing a new 20 grain hunting round for the 17HMR in addition to the ballistic tip 17gr and hollowpoint 17gr fare.
I have seen the blued--not heavy barrel--not laminated stock Savage and Marlin 17 under 200 dollars. Either is one heck of a shooter but of course this all stainless heavy barrel with grey laminated stock sure is nice for back porch shooting /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif.
Has anyone gotten one of those Airforce Talons, a pressure bottle type air gun?
Did y'all know that Lewis and Clarke carried some air rifles with them that could kill big game? Did y'all know that air guns were used by Europeon armies and also by the gentry for hunting? Some made their way over here as well. J

Well It took a couple trips to WALLYWORLD and a lot of looking but I got me a scope for my favorite plinker! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif After looking in the case at the scopes I was headed over to the bargain rack ta get me a 49.00 bushnell. The son was with me and asked me what I was doing, I said I would take this bushnell It would be fine. No.1 son says lets take a look at that NIKON again in the case. NIKON 4X PROSTAFF, nice matte fin., compact, Seems like a half mile of eye relief , with rings. 99.00 greenbacks! After mumbling something about way too much money I got one and so did the son for his 10/22 RUGER. Pretty dog gone nice I tell ya! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I can SEE!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I might even get the tape out myself now /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif But I gotta pass on the 150 yard stuff. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif C.B's or standard velosity is all we shoot at home to keep the peace with all the new folks moving in and building around here. Bulldozers and nailguns can be heard 7 days a week anymore around here. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I have a CO2 Gamo pistol that's fun to shoot.... only 425 fps but has still taken out a couple of possum. I also have a 10/22 that's a blast with a 4x40 scope... absolutely deadly to tree rats! Just bought a Browning Buck Mark Camper in .22.... taking it to hunting camp tomorrow to see how it shoots. My other pride and joys are a Marlin 336 RC in .35 Remington I inherited from my grandfather.... consistently shoots sub 1" groups at 100 yds with factory ammo (just getting into reloading)... other is a Sako .270 Hunter my wife bought me for our anniversary last year... dang accurate gun out of the bos /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
