My Garage/Shop Heater Install

Mine is WAY too small. Need to figure out a better place to store a 250gal aquarium tank and stand that is taking up valuable real estate.

Put it to use in the house or get rid of it. I am starting to do things like that that impact my garage/shop. I have 2 X 10 Joists so storage above for light stuff also works, have a fold up permanent ladder (really not up to fire code).

Let's not talk about up to code around here... this is a DIY forum. I try to meet code as best as I know but if I got a permit for every tweak around my house, I would go crazy. No patience and I like to spend my money on materials not inspectors.

Sorry I tweaked you. The house came that way, the inspection had it mentioned but nothing ever came of it and I ignored it, seller would not have fixed it anyway. I agree with you, I never get permits but I am pretty knowledgeable on the codes so work to that end the best I can. Do I do short cuts? What's that?

Ha ha.. and yes Ron, I need to get you over here this summer and put this Top n Tilt install to bed! Really the only thing holding me back is I haven't figured out the bracket design to support the remotes in an ergonomically pleasing location. I need to do some cardboard models I suppose.

Update on heater... well actually the temperature of the shop. I really have to insulate sooner than later. 6pm and 80degF outside. In the shop it is 83 on the far side and 87 on the sunbaked side! Never realized how hot it got in there in the summer!

Anyone doing spray-foam in the area?

For the walls? I plan on DIY blowing insulation above. I haven't looked into that yet but thinking I need to.

It isn't cheap but it can provide refrigeration quality insulation...

I have been in homes with it and dead silence and extremely efficient.... plus it "Glues" all the framing together...

Downsides... expense and if you need to go in to add utilities later.

Have not paid attention to the weather the last few days... I have a painter ready to go in Olympia and he said this is the time.

The plus with spray foam is sealing the building from air transfer. No air transfer results in good heat/cool retention. R value of spray foam isn't very good beyond it's ability to stop air flow. I believe it's R6 per inch with 90% of it's capability reached in the first two inches.

For the ceiling, DIY blow in, go for at least R45, R60 if you can. You'll need 18" - 24" to get that.

The last couple days we've been cool at night, last night 66F. I leave an overhead open in my shop at night, close it in the morning and leave the building closed up all day. Stays considerably cooler inside than outside temp which has been in the low 80s. That's all a result of low air transfer and good R value insulation.
