My geothermal compressor just died.

I just had a friend of mine get some R410a for me, it was right at 90 dollars for 30 pounds. I found this to be amazingly low considering the prices I was quoted from a HVAC guy.

There is nothing like gouging the customer and expect them to return. Word of mouth (including sites like this) go a long way.

My HP was fixed Friday. The guy had hard time to braze the compressor in. There was a persistent small leak on the suction port of the compressor but at the end (after I held a mirror under the port so he could see where the little hole was) he made it. He also changed the dryer/filter, contactor, added soft start, new refrigerant and charged 4.5 hour even though it took him more like 7 hours. It all together came to 2270 USD plus 136.20 tax. Based on other bids it was just about what the other people would charge.

Did anyone acid test the oil in the old compressor? You need to find the cause of the failure or this can happen again.

No they didn't test it. The acidity issue mentioned in several articles published on line caused corrosion and leaks in the heat exchangers usually in less than two years of operation. Motor of my compressor shorted to ground after 10 years of operation. I still have the compressor so I can test the oil.
