I put in a smaller pre made pond for my sister in west salem ohio she kept gold fish feeders year round in it. we used cattle water heater floating type to keep it free of ice in one spot and covered it with a 5x10 concrete panel 6x6 wire mesh. laid heavy black plastic on top to form a dome. I bent the panel into an arch to hold the plastic up off the water & wooden bridge. The bridge I built was (cat sized) that her cat used to set/lay on the bridge for hrs trying to snatch a fish... she pulled out the not so hardy water lilies and left the fish in there. tossed in some floating food sticks when the ice melted off 3/4 the surface during warm spells is all. the 3rd year heavy winds & power knocked the top off with real cold temps it froze up pretty good. took a 18v sawzall & hacked a hole back in the ice... some of the fish died off that year though. spring she tossed in other fish & some koi as well. pond was up for about 5 years till she got sick & later passed away. I kept her fish & pond clean for her to set on the deck & watch her fish till the end though... it was pulled & filled in right afterward as her husband was a pretty lazy @$$ who didnt want to care for any of her pets or plants...
one day I'll put ina nice pond for myself though I have lots of blue herins in my area that may be an issue. I stopped up my creek a bit & dug a good sized hole in off to the side where I tossed in some bluegill. they were ate by herin & coons within a week I think...
