My Harbor Freight Trailer for TransMule

Hi,
I just saw this thread, and I also bought one of the smaller HF trailers, and I put AG tires on the trailer because I will be using it in the woods, and I wanted better traction when I am going across small grades,. Not really necessary, but I had the tires sitting around. This is my smaller trailer with the sides kit from HF that I just built. I also coated the floor with Rust-oleam Restore. Great little trailer:

I have a Haulin brand flatbed trailer, originally from Home Depot from the mid 90's. I've got a lot of good use of it on the road. It is a little more substantial than the HF trailers, but still very lightweight for pulling. I had to replace the tongue, and accidentally cut it a bit long and welded both ends before realizing my error. But, I like it long. It means that on an 8 foot trailer, I can carry stuff that is substantially longer than 8 foot long.

The one thing I'd add would be better tie downs.

I would encourage installing the light kit. You never know when the trailer might come in handy for a run to town.

As far as the AG tread, it looks cute behind the tractor, but I doubt it will make a substantial difference for "traction" as you are neither driving, braking, nor steering from that axle. Slipping sideways? In that case, using a front ribbed tire might be an improvement. You can get small, wide tires which might be good, but it would also mean your trailer would stick out a few more inches on the sides. Nonetheless, the AG tires match your tractor nicely.

Thanks! I remember the trailers that home depot sold, and I haven't seen them for a few years, but that may just be in my area? I had the AG tires from a tiller that we ended up giving back to my grandmother, and had decent tires on it. I know they may not help much at all, but they should be a bit better than what I had, and I do like how they look with the tractor. If it was a ground driven implement, it would be great.. I think that I may add the light like you said. They are just sitting in a box. I do drive quite a bit on the road in front of our farm, but usually the tractor light are enough. I am not sure how the AG tires would tow on the road at speeds around 35mph? It really is pretty small to tow and use since I have the truck bed, and I di have a horse trailer if I really need to tow something large. We buy about 8 tons of hay a year, and tow it about 30 miles to our house from various fields, but I have been renting a 12foot u-haul for that. We were going to buy a larger flat bed trailer, or a used hay trailer, but for $30 a pop renting the U-haul, and having them maintain it, it really works aout well. We usually spend about $130 a year renting the trailer, and that is about 9 years worth of renting to pay for a used trailer.

Is the trailer that you bought from Home Depot about the same quality as the ones that they sell at Tractor Supply?

I think the new HD trailers look somewhat like the Tractor Supply trailers.

Mine has plywood decking. Mostly welded construction. Single bar tongue that used to tilt, but I never used it that way. I almost lost the tongue once, so now it is welded 3/4 the way back along the frame.

It has 4 stake pockets, but no railing. Mine has 8" tires, which allows it to be low, but 100% flat across the deck to the fenders.

Here is a photo that I posted on here a while ago. I keep planning on adding tie-downs, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Anyway, I suppose a trailer is only as good as what you need it for. Sometime I'd like to make a small tandem axle trailer from scratch, but haven't gotten around to that yet.

You can get reasonably good tandem axle farm trailers for less than $1000, but like you said, that also includes maintenance, and perhaps new tires which add up quickly.

Mom still has the hay trailer that Dad built. Sized for carrying about 70 bales of hay. Fenders flush with the edge of the trailer (less to get knocked by when loading), and the fenders the height of 1 bale and length of 2 bales.

I bought one of the Harbor Freight trailers. Used it for awhile behind my four wheeler. Sold the four wheeler and got a Kubota 400. Mounted both my sprayers in the trailer. Installed a folding jack wheel and keep it under a shed. The sprayers were pretty heavy full trying to get them into the bed of the UTV. Now the bed is still available and I just back-up and hook-up. The trailer has been as handy as a pocket on a shirt.
