My hardest assignment ever

I quit on my 30th birthday more than 25 years ago. I only smoked 10 years, but I was already wheezy and when we opened the door in our house you could see smoke coming out.

My lungs at 55 are much better than they were at 29, I don't regret it one bit. My wife has tried several times to quit, once for 6 years. Right now she is almost a month out, using the patches. Hope she can do it.

I was wondering when someone would bring up the cost. Two packs a day at $5/pack = $10/day = $10 x 365 days = $3650 per year or $300/month.

Over the years I have gotten to know the people who work in our cafeteria. I don't even want to think how many years it has been but it is getting close to two decades.:D

I don't know how our game started but they smoke and I don't. Every once in awhile I would "catch" them going out to take a smoke break. They would try to hide that they were smoking or if on person was still inside working they would rat out the others who were outside on a break so I could "catch" them. :D

One day I asked how much a pack of smokes cost and they told me $5! I about had a heart attack. I did the same math as above and came to the same answer. I know the cafe folks are not making great money and those cigs are making a heck of a hole in their wallet. They are smoking a car payment a month for a danged nice car.

Duke and the other tobacco barons came up with a great money making scheme selling cigs.

Glad people are quitting.

Later,
Dan

I quit about 20 years ago and feel great, I do still smoke an occasional cigar and every once in a while a craving for one.

Unlike many people, I did NOT quit smoking for health reasons. And I don't believe quitting nearly 4 years ago has improved my health. I quit primarily because of the cost (I keep track of those things on the computer), secondly to keep the house cleaner, third to keep the car and pickup cleaner, and fourth because there are so few places you can smoke anymore away from home.

Of course we never got to the $5 a pack price. In fact, we bought our cigarettes in quantity via mail order and they had gotten up to almost $1.33 a pack, but for both of us, that amounted to over $150 a month even then.
