My new 4010 is broke..... (250 hours)

If it looks like a "pin inside a pin" then it may be a roll pin. This will require the old one to be driven out (if still there) and the new one to be driven in.
Wish you good luck getting it back together and running.

My 4010 tends to slow down the PTO if what it is driving gets bogged down. Does yours do this?

I'm wondering whether they put this slow down (probably a pump bypass valve) on the later models. Got mine last November.

By the way, I found that you can jack the rear wheels from the drawbar platform using a regular floor jack. That, or driving it over a depression might give you more room to work down there.

(Found out about jacking the rear wheel because you have to remove one of them to get the 3 pt bar out from in front of the hydraulic filter to change it out.)

What size tiller are you using, and, also, does it have a slip clutch. Remember, the 4010, has only something like 14 PTO hp. If you're using, say a 60" tiller, or taking a big bite in hard soil, then I would think something would need to give (or, you would want something simple like a pin to shear and not something really expensive!).

48" JD tiller (JD says is correct size and model from their site)
Yes there is a slip clutch
Also just to make it even more odd I was tilling the same area I had just went over and the skids are set as shallow as they can go.

The fix is a .88 cent wimpy roll pin (3/8" in diameter ) and $300 in labor

Its a terrible design

are there 2 roll pins? I have seen some JD parts that are held together by 2 roll pins, idea is that it makes it less likely to shear. I guess you put the big one in first to get it set correctly, and then the smaller one goes inside the larger one. Might keep it from happening again.

Yep its a pin inside a pin (3/16 and a 1/8) , so far I have broke sets 2 of those. The only thing I can try is to set the slip clutch EXTRA loose?

One other thing to check (since it has not been mentioned yet) slip clutches freeze up and might as well be one piece of metal if not worked. Have you backed off the nuts, slipped the clutch a few times then re-torqued to spec?

May I also suggest you not take too big a bite with the tiller. Be patient. Go very slowly (minimum ground speed) when tilling.
