Re: My \"new\" 8n

Get familiar with ytmag.com if you aren't already. Lots of good guys on there with great advice:

Be sure to get an over-running coupler before you crank up the brush hog. They are great fun. Love my 8N.

I went to an auction with several tractors and implements on Saturday. They had an 8N that sold for $1200 there. Ran pretty solid but the hood was pretty rusted up with several holes, etc. Tires fair, a little "blow-by". I paid $2500 for mine repainted, with 5' hog two years ago, good tires and body.

Re: My \"new\" 8n

Well, got it today. Had a chance to take a spin around the yard with it. Seems to work good, but after awile it stalled, and I could not get it started. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif The fuel tank is a little low, and the petcock does not seem to be working right, so I think it's just not going into reserve. I will check it out when I have some time. Until then, she ran good. Smokes a bit, but when it warms up, it gets better. Just for giggles, I ran over some small trees, and brush with the plow. Knocked it right down. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif Can't wait to get the hog on it. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: My \"new\" 8n

Paul, the best feature on that tractor is the live hydraulic system. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gifThe front end pump looks well done, the rest of the hydraulics are not so attractive. A front end loader would be a natural, and the loader frame could house the hydraulic reservoir and make a cleaner setup for you. One of our neighbors had an 8N with a loader and he used a block of cement with three-point attachment hooks on it as a counter weight to get more traction. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: My \"new\" 8n

Get a bucket to hold under the bowl assembly and unscrew the fitting from the tank. You have a screen on the tank end of the fitting that I'll bet is plugged with rust. Unless someone has tore the screen off and the fitting itself is plugged. You can buy a new bowl assembly over the 'net or off the shelf at Tractor Supply. The Eastwood company sells a tank coating kit or you can have your radiator shop coat the inside of the tank. The radiator shop coat job is usually pretty expensive. Once rust goes through the lead coating inside the tank it is a real PITA to clean. The baffle in an 8N tank makes it just about impossible to just clean it out occationally. New tanks are available.

OH YA! You got that. It is kind of a rats nest of hoses. But no leaks, so thats a start. As for a loader, thats one thing I am thinking. I have seen the old loaders go for real cheap, or eaven free. I am thinking there has to be a way to convert a trip loader to full hydro. Oh, and to all the people who say its hard to steer these things with weight on the front. Your right. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif With that plow hanging out up front there, shes a bear. But doable when moving, and still beats digging by hand. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks for the tip. The tank does not "look" bad, but you know how that goes. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Something is not right with the petcock. It will close up ok, and spinning it out the two turns is normal, but trying to open it up fully for the reserve, it just turns, turns, and turns. It is not seming to top out. Is this normal? Do you have to turn it out a lot to get it fully open? BTW, its not the knob, the shaft is spinning also. Thanks for the help.

Re: My \"new\" 8n

The fuel shutoff on my 8N takes around 8 full turns to open it all the way. I have had
the fitting itself get plugged with rust once or twice, now I make it a regular habit of
removing the bowl and screen to keep them clean.

Your tractor looks in good shape! A friend of mine also had an 8N which smoked at first
a little marvel mistery oil in the gas took care of his problem. His tractor set for a while
and the rings probably were a little sticky. I have the Wagner front end loader on mine
it has the narrow trip bucket. There were once kits available to convert the trip
feature to a hydraulic cylinder. My friend had a wide bucket on his but I do not remember
the brand loader he had.

You should get many hours of service out of your tractor and do a lot of work. One word
of advice, keep a spare set of spark plugs on hand, every once in a while mine will foul a
plug, I have a little blow-by also. It takes only 10 minutes to change all four plugs if you have
a problem. Many new parts are available off the shelf at the Tractor Supply Co. along with
service manuals.

Have fun and be careful out there.

Randy
