The previous owners had spoken with the owners of the land behind my house and they had made a trail and ridden their horses through there. Said it would be no problem.
I would of course contact the owners of the land before I took my tractor back there and cleared out the trail though.

I would definitely contact the current owners of the property and get it in writing if possible. Power line right of ways and other rights of way are tempting, but technically only the entity named in the right of way paperwork are allowed there.
It would irritate me to no end to have someone helping themselves to my property, regardless of what the previous owner may have said. If people ask me, I'll probably be very accommodating, but I'll be rather irritated if someone just shows up on my property without asking.

I think all the fellas gave you good sound advice !
The neighbor to my right in Vt is an elderly lady out in the middle of 20 acres. I needed to get my tractor on her property to get some large stones when I was building a stone wall in front of our cabin. I simply knocked on her door and just asked, I not only got cart blanc to get any stones but also got permission to fell trees into her open meadow if I couldnt get access from my side of the hedgrow ! I feel better knowing that I have permission to be on her property !

That older barn is really special. Keep an eye on it. If those two brothers decide they ever want to knock it down, tell them you'll do it for free just for the lumber!
