Hey guys thanks for the feedback. The mower is called a 'UFO' Single Drum, and yes it is a hay/silage mower. It is very old, manufacture ceased many years ago, however these have been replaced with twin drum mowers of varying widths - 1.6m (mini-twin)
- 2.07m (standard twin)
- 2.4m (maxi twin)
There is also a trailing model with four drums but I forget the width. Also there is a hydraulic lift model. These are manufactured here in New Zealand so I would be doubtful wether there are any in the US. Go to Reese Agri website for more info.
I'll get some pics of my tractor at varying stages of completion as soon as I can. It's getting a COMPLETE tear down, fix up & repaint so its a big task!!

Nice job, I would have never guessed that pile of parts would end up looking like that! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Just wondering about bearings, bushings, and shafts. On many old pieces of equipment these have been destroyed and must be repair/replaced. Sometimes one little part can really cause you "grief." /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

From the relative size of the pulleys, it looks like the drum rotates at least 3 times the rpm of the pulley, probably more. That large a drum, rotating at high speed without a guard will be interesting to use. I guess if you use it in a hay field where you know what is there you will have less chance of running into surprises. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

When I saw that I was thinking exposed disc bine! I wonder how many people have been hurt from debris being thrown at the operator?

Every nut, bolt and bearing was replaced, as they were all rusted to bits, the bearings making loud grinding noises when I first aquired the mower! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Also the mainshaft which the flywheel and PTO attatch to had to be relaced after a...err....umm...."altercation" with a 140hp NH. It was the only tractor avaliable to use at the time and seeing as we were doing silage it seemd like an ideal time to test her out. Unfortunately our NH's don't have 'soft-start' PTO's and the mainshaft was twisted almost a full 180 degrees round. I'll get some pics tomorrow, the shaft is still at work.

As for the flying debris, it can be dangerous but most of the time if you shut a paddock up for hay or silage then it gets cleared of any obstacles at the same time. Hitting a soft cow-dung at full speed, however is not good! The tractor and operator (me) /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif end up coated in it!! The downside of topping a paddock after cows have been in first!

Heres a pic of the twisted shaft. The keyway you can see on the left, should actually be on the otherside of the shaft! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

So true! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif So many of us compact tractor owners with much less horsepower have popped lots of shear bolts before we learned to feather the the PTO engagement at low rpm. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
