not to invade your thread but I go to RB auctions too.. they have them here in FL near ring power sometimes.

I appreciate you kicking in -- looks pretty silly to be the only poster in a thread. I was in Jacksonville for my buddy's retirement from the Coast Guard a few years ago and think I drove by Ring Power. It was either there or in Tampa when I was stationed at MacDill in the late 80s.

Yeah, I think RB auctions are great so long as you don't get carried away with the bidding. Here's my latest purchase (and the reason I'm selling the 66"):

i go to any auction with a set spending limit in mind.. to do otherwise is dangerous.

I see people pay over retail for some things...

Did you do everything on the Internet or did you go to the auction? I heard there was a requirement to put up something like $2000 to bid on site and if you didn't wind up buying anything it would be refunded but no ext act time when you would get it back. Was that your experience? What ever you are willing to share about the process I would appreciate. Thanks!

I had noticed the Houston RB location when driving down the freeway, but assumed the kind of stuff they sold to be way out of my league. I believe I read about regular people buying stuff from them on TBN. So I stopped by the local site the weekend before the auction to ask them how it worked. While I was there I registered and got a bidder number. So far as I know it's permanent -- it always uses the same 5 digit number for my bids. After you are in the system you can register for any auction online. I have registered and bid at the Houston and Ft. Worth auction sites, but only ended up buying something 3 or 4 times. Note that these 2 Texas auctions are both big 2 day auctions which include "timed auctions", which are a lot like eBay with things counting down every 30 seconds. I have mostly only bid for and bought stuff in the timed auctions. And I always go view the stuff I might bid on the weekend before the auction to make sure it's OK.

Yes there is a 25% deposit on your bid limit, but I just use a credit card for that. They don't actually charge anything against the card, but they do put a hold on your card for the deposit. In my case I always do a $2500 deposit for a $10,000 bid limit and they release it within a few days. I've never bought anywhere near that amount -- the most was that 1st time that I went a little "attachment happy" and spent $1700.

You can also bid online in the regular auction online using a free software (Windows only) application you can download from the RB website. Then you are bidding against the people at the auction as well as other online bidders. I actually did submit a live online bid for a new shipping container (seacan) once, but it quickly rose to more than I was willing to go.

Probably the easiest way to check out how it works is to go to rbauctions.com and watch an action. The bidding has started on the Edmonton timed auction tomorrow so all you have to is click on the "Enter Timed Auction" button and the hit the "View only" button. Of course, just like in eBay the excitement often happens in the last few seconds of the countdown for each item. They also have lots of self-help information on how the various auction stuff works.

TO BID:
1. Deposit what you expect to bid. Credit card is fine. The deposit is not charged to the credit card but you do have to have enough credit left to cover the deposit. It can be done online if you establish an account.

2. Deposit within one week of the auction.

3. Get the account and "Express Bidder" arrangement set up well ahead. That only has to be done once.

4. If you pay for a won auction by cash or cashier's check there is no credit card fee. You will be sent an invoice if bidding is done online.

5. Some auction are "Timed Auctions". It is much like eBay bidding. Bids can be submitted a week ahead if there is a deposit on file.

6. The Ritchie Bros. website is a challenge to navigate.

Yeah, but I think you said it much clearer than I did with a lot less BS! Also no credit card fee if you use an ATM card - my payment preference. Oh, and there is a 10% surcharge if you spend less than $2500.

Hey Lil Blue -

I recently discovered the fact that I need a grapple for the property.....and of course a bigger tractor. :D
How's the quality on the versetech? What size steel is used? Pretty heavy duty, or medium duty? Do you know how much it weighs? Assuming it's a standard Q/A?
Unfortunately I'm a ways away in Ohio.

Who's the CG buddy? I retired from the CG in 06.

thanks!!

Hi Frank,

I think it's considered a light/medium duty grapple. The steel is 3/8" and it weighs about 400-500 lbs. (a guess). Yes, it's a standard quick attach mount. Wildkat calls their version a "Single Cylinder Econo Grapple":

Even these econo models are designed for commercial skid steer use, so I think it would take a pretty big machine to do one serious damage. Essentially, I traded down to the 48" version so I could lift more and get into the woods easier. I'll PM you about my CG buddy.
