I have a Stihl MS361 that I fired up yesterday or should I say when I tried to fire it up... I replaced the plug and got it started but it is popping, banging, stalling. I can get it running for a bit then it shuts down. I can restart it right away then its the same thing again. I am just going to take it in for service to be fixed hopefully its not to expensive..... I do have a new Stihl limbing saw on order, can't remember which model but it is the same saw they use up in the trees but with a handle on the back, weighs around 7 pounds.... Hopefully it will be here soon!!

Did it sit, unused, with gas in the carb for a long time? Are you using fresh gas/treating it with Sta-Bil or similar? I think that the gas companies changed their formulation in the last few years and it caused me a lot of angst until I started using the additive every time I filled the gas can at the station.

It does get used a good bit but it might sit for a month or two over the winter, gas is from last year also mixed with all stihl products. I always run super in my saws etc. I guess I should add some stabil to my cans.... I just dropped it off to have them go over it anyway, the saw has never been serviced in the 10 years I have had it. I has always been kinda hard to start the last few years when cold. So as of right now my new little saw wont be here until next week and the big saw is 10/12 days out... So now I am sawless...:( I am going to stop at home depot and get some wood blades for the sawzall so I can at least trim limbs off the logs in the meantime...

Have you checked the exhaust for buildup?

The guys at the service desk told me that it was probably not exhaust build up because I have always run stihl oil in the gas. He said that happens a lot using other brands with their saws.... Don't know if this is true or not???? Figured he would know.....

Stihl Dino oil in ( was it the orange bottle?) has been the worst for build up on screens from what I have seen.

Sounds like your carb has gas in it that's varnished over (gummed up). Take the carb apart and clean it well with carb cleaner. Blow it out with compressed and reassemble. Should run like new.

You must keep stabil in the gas or run it out of fuel when you are done. 2 stroke engine carbs are notorious for clogging up if they sit for awhile with fuel in them.

Good luck! :)

sounds like old fuel or gummed up carb if the exhaust isn't plugged up. Good luck hopefully they will be gental on you LOL:thumbsup:

Most if not all modern 2 stroke oils have fuel stabilizer in them. I use Husky oil and it says it on the label I think the Baileys oil does to I have to look, Stihl oil would too I imagine.

Good info. I have noticed that premix is stable. Just never knew why.
