It's a very interesting design. In my mind, I question how strong the attachments are. How many bolts are tying the truss to the post? Are they bolts that go all the way through, or lags? I only see two, is that corrct? What size and are they gavlanized? I've heard that the larger lumber is still PT in the old method that doesn't corode metal, but I don't know this for fact.

Your making great progress, thanks for the pics!!

Looks great Brent!

It looks like the top chord of the truss sits on top of the pole? I would think that that would be a good way to transfer the load to the pole instead of having it all bearing on those lag screws/bolts.

Were those trusses built locally or trucked in from Perka, Miracle Truss, etc?

Keep us posted!

Eddie,

I was going to post the same thing. In the picture, it looks like there is a flat piece metal at the top edge of the truss that rests on the top of the post. But it sure looks like just 2 lag screws are attaching the truss to the sides.

What would be great would be a metal cap on the post that the truss is either welded to or secured in some fashion to keep the shear force of the truss from taking out those 2 bolts plus prevent the truss from pushing the tops of the post outward under load.

Other than that, looks really good.

Good eye, yes the truss is resting on top of the post. The lag bolts just hold it in position.

I was asking the builder where he gets the trusses, they are manufactured locally. Actually he said there were quite a few manufacturers here in Alabama to get them from.

Here is where they were at the end of day 3. I worked with them today, I installed plumbing for the shop sink, bathroom, etc. I moved a lot of dirt and they put in insulation and most of the roof. Concrete will be poured tomorrow.

Everything looks just great Brent! I am sure that you are excited to see a nice big workshop go up.

If I could ask: I am curious what size angle iron they used in your trusses? I built this barn using metal trusses a couple years ago. As you can see, the design of the trusses is pretty similar to yours. In preparing for that shop, I did a lot of reading, etc and learned a fair amount about truss design and how to calculate compression and tension loads in trusses using finite element analysis. But my experience is still limited to that one barn (and a smaller one a couple years earlier). So I was just curious what sized angle iron was used in your trusses? From the pictures, it looks like maybe 1.5" by 1/8"?

Just curious about what the pros are doing compared to my blind attempts of the past!

I am not sure what size the angle iron, from memory, I would say you are close if not right on the mark with your estimate.

I went by this morning and made a couple of pictures of what it looks like after 4 days. The concrete truck should be there right now.
