I thought this was kind of assuming so I thought I would post it. I was talking to someone the other day and I said I had spread 160 gallons of week killer around. They said to me, "oh your gardener is round up". I really like to keep my place nice and I absolutlely hate tall grass after I have just mowed everything around trees and land scaping rocks.
We finally had two dry days last weekend, and what is more important is to have no wind. We have had rain almost every day in the month of april. So last weekend I got my pull behind sprayer and got it tunned up fixed any leaks and starting spraying I always make it a little stronger then recommended I do not care to do this once never mind twice. As you drive down my drive way you can see about 25 acres and I like it to look good. I only have once chance to make a frist impression for people coming to board their dogs. And grass growing around trees and land scape rocks looks terrible.
So I wait for no wind which is rare here and at least no rain for a day and
spray everything with at least 4 to 5 inches of growth for a kill. I sprayed last weekend and it has been so wet I thought I hope I am not wasting my time and today when I ran the dogs I can finally start to see that the grass is dying 7 days later. It has been cold and wet here and that is not the best conditions to kills weeds. Hot and dry is much better.
We are supposed to have no rain for a week and I will now hit the spots I missed, or did not get a good kill. I find easier to use round in the spring and once I get a good kill weed wack and not have to bother again for the summer there is always enough to do here and I hate to weed wack.

so what do you use for a mix rate?

We use round up along the creek near our house. It definitely works. We have an Ortho dial and spray container that attaches to the hose. I think the adjustments are ounces of spray - gallons to water. This last time I think I set it at 4 ounces per gallon. I also sprayed a little along our fence and around the pool equipment. It killed everything it touched. As soon as playoffs and then possibly all stars (if we get selected) for little league season is over I intend to use it out at the ranch along the fence and around the old barn.

Trees will tolerate roundup to a point. Be careful!

It is not suppose around creeks, streams, or other water sources. Read the label.

I hear ya. I try to be friendly to the environment whenever possible. Based on a google search many studies have been done - looks like an even mix of people believe roundup is evil vs people who believe the main ingredient glyphosate is non toxic. I don't know enough about it.

We used to have heavy brush in that area - the heavy brush would bring snakes and other critters. Inside the brush there was also poison ivy etc. I have young children, a wife and an Akita - not too mention I also have ME. If there is a better way to limit the growth, limit the snakes and critters and get rid of the poison ivy - I'd like to know about it. I'd be willing to consider other options. I'm a big fan of doing what is right vs wrong especially when the pro's out weigh the con's...

Thanx for the info - I'll have to do more research before I use it again.

The problem is many of the new formulations of glyphosate products contain additives such as contact herbicides and surfactants that can be harmful to amphibians, fish, and other organisms.

Accord and Forester's Non-Selective are two products labeled for forestry use that contain 53.8% plain glyphosate, which is safer for use in riparian and moist forest sites than surfactant-loaded glyphosate formulations such as Roundup. Both of these 53.8% forestry formulations are more concentrated than other 41% glyphosate products locally available for lawn and garden use. Since they are specialty herbicides for forestry use, they are not usually found in farm and garden stores.

For a foliar treatment, you will need to add a surfactant to the glyphosate then add water to make up a spray solution. Most surfactants are highly toxic to amphibians, frogs, and other aquatic fauna. I use Agri-dex Spray Adjuvant, a low toxicity formulation recommended from studies compiled by the US Fish & Wildlife Service.

You need dang heavy, multiple doses of Roundup to kill trees. Ask me how I know this. :)

Roundup is a glorious product. We run through about 100 gallons a year keeping the weeds down along the ditches, road, property in general. Strap it on the back of the ATV and we're good to go. The wife sprays, I drive.

Some trees die with a single spray of Roundup contacting the bark. Read Pear, and dogwood. Black Locust trees can be watered with the stuff. I killed two great lawn trees with it by accident, spraying vines..
