1998 John Deere 770
Not sure if this is good news or not...but my wife has asked me how big of a tractor I'd need in order to get a 2nd seat so she can ride around with me when I mow, etc. My first reaction (which I suppressed) was to say no way - that's my tractor time you're messing with here...

But I'm also sensing an opportunity to upsize! Right now I'm running a Deere 770, and there's no way I could modify that thing to accommodate a 2nd seat.

I don't need a huge tractor - frankly a CUT is better for me running around here in the woods doing tree work, etc. How far up the scale do I need to go to get a tractor where a 2nd seat, or a much wider seat, is possible?

Morning ! Awesome avatar pic . I don't know what to tell you since your saying a cut's more practical for you , but even though I just woke up and still half asleep some thoughts come to mind . If wife is a still petite in the low 100 lb range just flat out sit her on your lap and put your arms around her . Saves money and with the rumbling of the tractor could get interesting .
However I can tell you from experience most wives aren't in the low 100 lb range anymore after a couple years of marriage .

So that leaves me to solution number two ! Are you ready ? A double seat horse saddle , just take the fenders off take your tractor seat off and mount saddle on it . Its not that bad and idea if you ever flip the tractor you can even hang on to the horn ! :D

BTW I'am a BIG advocate of husbands , wives , boyfriends /girlfriends getting outside and along as its safe working together !

Mr. Taylor, my guess is that once Mrs. Taylor has some seat time with a rotary cutter, a flail mower or most any PTO powered implement that requires moderate engine power, she's going to tell you, "Thank you sweetheart but today I have to get my nails done or I have to go to the Walmart for groceries".

Otherwise, it might be best to just get her her own tractor with say, a drag harrow. Of course, she will have to learn how to grease everything and fuel it and change oil etc. My guess is a couple of hours in the Texas heat on a noisy tractor and that will be the end of it.

This would actually be perfect. I need to use her as an excuse to buy the bigger tractor (and get some fun implements for it) then convince her she really doesn't want to ride by hitting every rut in the field! In all seriousness, we're likely to end up with some foster kids in the home soon and some tractor time with me might be a good thing...

Sounds like a fun idea, but it also sounds like something that will only happen once. Buddy seats are good for training, or bringing the grand kids along, to teach them to run the tractor. Not for visiting with somebody that you live with and see every day.

Does she want to start working the land?

Is she the type that will put in a days work on a tractor, and take care of it while using it?

My wife drove my tractor a few times to mow the food plot. It's only an acre, and she did a nice job of it, but it takes me awhile to make sure everything is perfect before she uses it, and then I'm always checking on her to make sure she hasn't done anything that will cost me a lot of money. This has happened 4 times in the last 6 years, and she loves to tell her friends about her tractor skills, but it's not such a great experience for me.

I think my experience will be like yours...my wife will probably ride a few times and then decide it's not so fun. I think it's much more likely that I'll have grandkids, foster kids, etc on the tractor with me while I mow. So I'm looking for options...

NOT a good idea to have kids ride along when you mow. They could fall off and get hurt. They could see you mowing and run after you for a ride. All kinds of bad things can happen.
Get a SxS or a crew SxS and have fun with the kids, just don't do it with your mowing tractor.

Safety Cap off.

You might have one on it already but me when I bushhog I dont want any extra people / livestock / dogs near me .
If you dont have them already might be cheap insurance to install a rear protection headache type rack on your tractor and make sure sure hog has chains on it and even then bushhoggin with extra people near is not 100% safe . Not tryin to put you on the spot or beat you up here on the keyboard but just saying . To many bad things can happen . Things flyin out from under hog , blade comin loose , pto shaft issues and all the while with heavy noise from equipment goin on . Just some thoughts .

You see buddy seats a lot on open parade tractors but not a good idea on an open station work tractor. Some look safe others not.
