I just thought I would pass on a little good fortune that passed my way recently.

My wife likes to enter contests on the internet. She is not picky... cash, cars, furniture, home giveaways, vacations... anything with value. One contest she entered a while back was being sponsered by an online travel agency and the grand prize was a vacation to one of twenty destinations, some in the good ol' U.S. of A and some to other locations around the world.

Well, you guessed it! She won! We culled through three quarters of the destinations because they were all within the continental U.S. (not exotic enough.) That left us with the choice of a trip to Alaska, Ireland, Brazil, Spain, Paris or Australia. We both agreed that we wanted to go somewhere that English was spoken (didn't want to get too exotic) so that narrowed down the choices a bit. We discussed it at length and finally got iit down to Alaska or Ireland. We only had seven days to fill out our eligibility and endorsement forms and could not decide which way to go. At the last minute we compromised and decided to go to..... Australia!

Talk about the vacation of a lifetime! We both agreed that since the trip was being paid for by someone else that we may as well get the most for our money. We figured Australia would be the last place we would go if we used our own money because of the cost. Only the airfare is paid but I am not going to complain.Sooo, sometime in 2003 we are going to fly off and spend up to 21 days in Oz.

Needless to say, we are both excited and can't wait to go. We will probably buy a good digital camera and take the camcorder as well. Gonna make some memories and take plenty of pix to remember the trip by. I'll try to remember to take some pictures that will interest you folks here on TBN and post 'em when we get back.

Anybody else ever win anything? Only other thing of any consequence that I ever won in my life was an Apple IMAC computer a couple of years ago. I used it a couple of months, did not like it and sold it.

Congratulations. My Mom used up all the family luck a long time ago. Back in 1953 she won a new Chevy on one $1 ticket at a fire company carnival at a town near here.

An older gent who retired from our company still comes around twice a year selling $20 gun raffle tickets that use the PA Daily Number and run for about six weeks at a time. Probably spent enough on them already to buy a gun...................chim

Congratulations!

A very similar thing happened to my girlfriend a couple of years ago. She won a trip on 'secretary day' to ... the U.S. of A! (Atlanta) You might say, well yeah so what, we're allready in the U.S. of A, but if you take a look at my bio you'll notice I'm living in Belgium, so this was quite a surprise. The airfare was paid, all other expenses were on our account. We decided to go from Atlanta to Orlando and visit DisneyWorld, Cape Canaveral etc. It was great fun, I can recommend winning a holiday to everyone/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Woohoo

The active TBN member numbers in Australia are set to jump by 100% next year /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

You'll have a great trip I am sure.

Keep us posted as to where you are intending to go in your trip here.

If in doubt as to a couple of places, PM me and I'll try and help you out.

Depends on what you want to do?

We have done a lot of the "out of the way" type places as we aren't ones for the big cities but there is heaps to do.

Cheers

Did I say Woohoo ???

Chris - Congratulations on your good fortune but just a little heads up....... Don't forget to set aside some money to pay for the tax on your trip. You should receive a 1099 on the value of the trip and will be required to pay tax on it. A friend of mine received a trip to Paris and was quite surprised when a 1099 showed up in the mail/w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif. Chuck

Great Chris,

however, being the overly pessimistic guy that I am when it comes to freebies (ya gets what ya pays for), I'll just suggest that you read all the fine print really well.

There's far too many of these companies that have seemingly great vacations that turn out to be far less than what they make you think. My wife got stung on one of the 1 week cruise free vacations years ago ... the boat turned out to be a rustbucket, the hotels were fleabags, etc .... in other words - everything that was supposed to be included was ... but wasn't really useable. I guess they planned to make all their money off the upgrades.

Here's hoping your experience is far, far better!

Hey, congratulations!

You asked if anyone had won anything of significance. I haven't but the wife did (aren't they great sometimes!).

We were visiting my folks about a month ago and went to a family get-together at my grandparents (grandpa celebrates his 80th this year!). Anyway, the womenfolks decided to go to the local benefit (seminary picnic) and play some bingo. The prizes were all handmade quilts made by members of the church (Grandma,Mom,Aunt made one together for it). No machine quilting allowed. Anyway, my mom bought $10 in cards for my wife and she proceeded to win not one, but TWO quilts (one queen, one king!). As there were about 500 people playing at the time, it was not that easy to do. Anyway, that made her vacation, and mine too, when I saw how happy she was.

I'm with wingnut. Read the fine print and beware. I hear of people all the time being taken for a ride on these scams.

We won one of these trips, not sure if it's the same one, last year and my wife was completely excited. I had to work but told her to take one of her friends with her. Well it turned out you had to stay at a specific hotel. The hotel was $400 a night with a minimum of seven nights. It was a nice hotel but the free trip would have cost $2800. I called the travel agent and got the same trip to a similiar hotel for $1200.

Thanks to all for the congrats, comments and advice!

Thomas:

Never really took a first honeymoon, so your thinking is right on!/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Chim:

I have spent enough on raffle tickets and football pools over the past 25 years to pay for an Australian vacation! Won $100 once...

Steveng:

I have read your bio before... glad you folks from across the big pond are with us to give us a little different insight on things from time to time. I'd love to visit your country some day. Seems like a lovely place with a lot of WWII sites to visit.

Hi Neil,

I was hoping you would respond. You can bet your boots I will be in touch with you about where to go, what to see. Right now we are just trying to decide on the time of year. Right now we are thinking maybe next October. Since your seasons are opposite of mine I would guess that would be early springtime? I won't be able to put down my vacation choice until December. After that I will get with you on the particulars of the trip. Thanks for the offer to help!

Worksmart:

Good reminder! I wonder if I will get taxed on the trip this year? Since there is no way to know how much the tickets will cost until we book our flight I suspect I will be taxed on it next year.

Wingnut and cowboydoc:

I appreciate the reality check. I was hardpressed to believe this trip was for real and read the fine print. Fortunately this trip only covers airfare so that makes it a little harder for the travel company pull one over on us. I receive phone calls and mail all the time about Vegas and Florida vacations and a few cruise trips and I do use the "if it seems to good to be true..." approach on them and decline all offers.

In this case the trip is being offered by a well known internet company. I guess it is okay to mention their name since they will be using my name in their promotions and I have nothing to gain and no vested interest by revealing their name (fast talking, low voiced announcer making disclamers goes here.) The trip is through Orbitz.com, which is one of the more popular internet travel agencies and it seems like everything is on the up and up. Nonetheless, we are being cautious and making sure things are what they appear to be.

fishman:

Tell your wife to keep on entering, especially for anything that is free to enter. My wife used to enter contests the old fashion way, with postcards, stamps, stationary and envelopes by the box. She put a scad of money into her hobby over a period of time and won a bunch small stufff like NCAA basketballs (two,) ice chests, towels and tee shirts, a small portable gas grill, candles, drink glasses and the list goes on and on. But she was persistant (and the cost to enter contests on the internet is zero) and we are now the proud owners of one vacation for two to the land of koala bears, kangaroos and guys named Neil!/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

One thing I want to find out about this trip is where the connecting flight will be. My wife suggested that if we connect in Hawaii.... well you get the idea! Might just make a mini-world tour out of this 21 days!

Once again, thanks to all for the congrats and comments!
