Yanmar YM2200
I recently changed the rear axle seals in my Yanmar YM2200. When I searched for information on the internet on the seal change, I was not able to find any information. As a service to other YM2200 owners I took photographs of the whole process and created a nifty cross-sectional drawing of the axle housings.

The bearings are an interference fit on the axle and the bearing fit in the housing is an interference fit. As a result you will need a press to press the assembly apart and you will need to press it all back together after the seal is installed.

Here is a link to my website with pictures of the entire project:

Nice layout. You have a nice looking tractor, work space and equipment also.

Looks like a awful lot of work. I would have thought all you had to do was either pull the hub flange off, or if no go, (rusted on), worst case, pull the pto assembly, ( who would have thought, you have to spell out the whole word, "assembly"), remove the snap ring from the axle, pull the axle, rip out the seal, drive a new one in and re-assemble.

YM2200 Axle Seals

Doug, that's more or less the way we do it, but we always replace the seal collar too, that is too much work not to replace the seal collar.

I will have to agree with you Norm. That is the way I just did it earlier this year on my 2000 still not a drip.Took a couple of hrs. and far from doing it in record time. I was only a few weeks out of the ICU:(

I certainly would recommend changing the seal collars while it was apart. You are right, it is way too much work not to.

Due to the lack of information that I had going into it, I didn't know that there was even a seal collar there. I ordered seals ahead. Fortunately. my collars were in pretty good shape. I didn't want to take the time to delay putting it back together. Heck, I didn't even know if they were available. So I just left the old ones alone.

Norm and Carey,
I agree, this is a lot of work for a couple of lousy seals. The axle flanges on a YM2200 are part of the axle and are not removable. So removing the flanges is not an option.

As far as removing the housings go, even if you did get the snap-ring off, the axles are a tight enough fit in the bearings that you would play heck getting them out and back in. In reality, removing the housings is not too tough. Once the fender is out of the way (4 bolts), then you just have to remove the row of bolts that fasten the housing to the tractor (11 bolts) and you have it off with everything accessible.

Norm, don't think your going to pull the hub flange off or pull the pto assembly on a YM2200.

Yes, this is not a hard job, it just takes a lot of time.
