Okay, I have a little mystery that I am sure you all can solve for me in nothing flat.

When I dropped the oil pan off my G176 (MF65), I noticed the following piece of metal sitting under the flywheel. Is this something left over from manufacturing or did it maybe pop off some part of the transmission, or could it have worked its way down there during maintenance?? I am baffled.

(I dropped it in the oil pan - that's why it's all oily - it wasn't before)

Which turned out to be this:

With this marking on it:

WOW!!!

you sure are lucky that the flywheel didn't pick it up and get in a bind somewhere!

It's pretty thin, I think the flywheel would have made short work of wadding it up pretty good ... but really, I am waiting for someone to tell me that it's like the Golden Ticket from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ... that it's a "Massey Dollar" - that Massey-Ferguson dropped into the transmission housing of one in a million tractors to see who would find it, and if you did, you'd get a free overhaul!

I can dream, right? :D

Looks almost like a plug to me, like a big "welch" plug from a carb. Is it curved at all? Or flat?

No it is flat as a pancake.

I got this tractor for a song. The caveat was that it has a monkey head-sized hole in the block from a thrown rod.

I dropped the pan to assess the damage, hoping for the best, finding it not so good.

I am on the hunt for a new block/engine (G176) if you happen to know of one laying around. ;-)

Looks like the plug on the back side of the camshaft opening in the block

I didn't know there was such a thing, so I guess that would make sense - seeing where it appeared, and the fact that the camshaft took a beating when the rod let loose.

Guess I won't know for sure until I crack her in half.

How are those plugs normally held in place?

Thanks!

If the O.D. measures 2-1/8", it is the expansion plug behind the cam.

Usually slightly convex when new. When replacing, clean th hole real good. Dad always put a dab of Permatex 2 around the lip, in the block. Fit the plug in, and seat by placing a hammer, or large flat punch on the high point, and a few hard taps with another hammer to expand it, seating it.
