Oil & Fuel Mystery Oil

   / Mystery Oil #21
There was a thread here a while ago about the ability of fuel additives to improve lubricity of low sulfur fuels. The linked article showed some testing of different additives, and whether or not the additives improved the oil's lubricating qualities. Marvel Mystery Oil was one of the few that actually made the situation worse, in other words it caused the fuel to become less lubricating, potentially causing increased injection pump and injector wear.

How valid any of this research was is debatable, as is any information, but it opened my eyes.

I was going to bring up the same thing. Marvel Mystery Oil was one of the worst things a person cam add to diesel.

And since you didn't add the link..........I ain't gonna either:laughing::laughing:(mainly cause I ain't searching, but it's in the 'fuel and lubricants' thread.

was this a pre ultra low 15ppm sulfur test.

might be different on the 15ppm diesel..

I remember years ago, my dad did overhauls on autos and he always used mmo, he also put atf in the gas tank for any type of fuel problem.

As I recall, it was a test of the ultra low sulphur fuel without any additive packages from the refinery. I'll see if I can find the link.

Holy Bat Juice!!!! That is some extensive information, thanks for digging that up. I skimmed through it but I want to take the time to read it through completely when time allows, but it is very interesting.

I saw it originally on another thread, but that one came up when I searched. One of the problems with ULSD is the additional refining reduces the amount of lubrication in the fuel.

Yes, so the refiners have to add something for lubricity. That posting was from 2009 when refiners had less experience standardizing fuel lubricity.
