I believe installing a new switch requires removing the cover plate doesn't it? Last word on the subject.

It's just a switch... it's open when in a gear range, closed when in neutral. don't matter which way you hook the 2 back up to the ones behind the cowl that are likely just twisted together.... unless you still have the polarized connectors, which will only plug in one way... it's just interupts power from the key switch to the solenoid.. that's why the 'bypass' lets you go. As rick said.. and owm meter or test lamp can be used to determine if the switch goes from open to closed when moved to neutral. And yes.. gotta pop the top. that diagram posted earlier for the 2600 shows part number 61 as the ns switch, and it's orientation under the cover with retainer # 57.. etc..

I just couldn't resist. I don't believe # 55 is the switch. I think that number is the two wire harness for the switch, which is located somewhere in the guts of the transmission. It probably looks like this. They probably bypassed the switch assembly because it didn't work. One of the leads could have come off the switch, or the switch is bad, in which case , he probably needs a switch and definitely needs a wire harness, which cost $19.60

As if this post on a simple ID of a NS start switch hasn't already been covered ad nauseam.

Not sure who brought up #55.. but it's not part of the NS start system..

The purpose of the cut wires has already been described accurately twice in this thread. THe cut wires and underlying switch can be tested with an ohm meter without the bother of removing the transmission cover. Sometimes it just doesn't make sense for an admitted 'tractor illiterate' to engage in recreational disassembly.

Not sure who brought up #55.. but it's not part of the NS start system..

I brought up #55. It is part of the NS Start System on the 6 speed trans. Your part numbers are for an 8 Speed Trans. I didn't see in his first post where he mentioned which one it was, so I just looked up the 6 speed.

This looks like and is described as a safety starter wire harness. If you guys have a better picture and description, please post. Will someone just take off the cover plate and take some pictures, and let us know the truth. If the switch wires are very much different, I will apologize for making an educated guess.

Some of you guys seem quite negative, thinking no one on here has much sense. Some of us did not get off the tater truck yesterday. I don't think I did.

the entire 6spd and 8spd diagram is on the nh parts website... no need to disassemble just to take pics.

I didn't see anyone being negative.. just stating facts.

I've never seen more discussion on what a part was as bad as this one is getting kicked around... that rubber plug with 2 broke wires on top is exactly, and only.. a ford NS switch.. I can't imagine what the ballance of the rest of the discussion is for.

if it's a 6 spd.. the part numbers are gonna be different than the 8spd.

the function is the same.. and the electrical circuit is the same... it's a switch that interupts power to the solenoid when in range. nothing more.. nothing less.

I can't imagine what all the discussion past that is for???

as for the pic of the wire harness.. what point are you trying to make... it's a wire harness.. 2 conductors.. some terminal ends and a rubber grommet / plug to fill up the hole in the trans top... this horse is well tenderized hamburger by now....

it's a moot point either way. did you happen to notice that the EXACT SAME part number is used for the 8spd and 6 spd NS switch. It makes little difference that the diagram specific line item numbers ( 50 vs 56 ) are different.. you don't order with the line numbers.. but rather the part numbers... which in this case.. for the NS switch is 81817901

it's not a glow plug connection.. and there's no need to pull the trans top to simply check it with a test lamp or ohm meter... and there's no need to pull the trans top just to verify what it is.. its quite obviously the wire stubs for a NS switch.

Now.. if it is bad, and the op wants to replace it ( reccomended ).. then he needs to grab the right part numbers once he pops the top and finds out what all needs replacing.

no rocket science involved.

My switches keep going bad, so I just jumper the two wires under the dash together. Then again I always put the thing in neutral (twice) before shutting it off. And check before starting.
