Just finished putting about 600 ft of split rail fence and am about to attach 4x2 wire to the inside of it. I want to use proper fencing staples (galvanized, u shape, usually around 8 gauge) - but want to do it with a nailer.

Anybody know of a nailer that can be used for this? The pneumatic or electric staplers that I've seen seem to only handle lightweight, 18 gauge staples.

I am open to suggestions!

I did a similar fence job. When we bought our house, the fence around the pool wasn't up to code (climbable). Its 500 feet of 4' high, 4X4 posts on 8' centers with 4 1X6 "rails".

Building inspector said we could staple 1 1/4" chain link on the outside of the fence & meet code. I used a pnuematic stapler with the 18 ga staples. 8,000 staples later, it has held up great for 1.5 years. The key with the weaker fastners is to use more of them. I put two staples per rail on 8-10" centers.

Even if the staples rust & the fence starts falling apart, It would be quicker to redo it 5 times than to have hand nailed the 8 ga staples.

Happy fencing.

Thanks for the reply - what size staples did you use? Were they galvanized?

I think they were 7/8" - The biggest I could get away with and not poke thru the other side of the wood. Not galvanized, don't know how long they are going to hold up.

Thanks for the information. I think I am going to ask a couple of the local fencing places what size staples they use - I can't imagine they hand nail. Also, driving nails into the locust posts will soon wear you out and I don't know how staples will fare either. Some more research it seems is needed ... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

If it wears you out you are not in very good shape,I have driven thousands of steeples into locust posts down through the years, thats the only type of posts that were used around here until the arrival of the treated posts. You might bend a steeple on occasion, but then again they have been in posts for years. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I tell you - looks like the comedians found this thread /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I was thinking more in terms of boredom and mashed fingers for than I was in terms of sore arms! You got me there.

The usual routine for me is to start nailing on some project and then ... slowly ... my mind starts to wander. Then THWACK! &^%&%% hammer!

It wears me out anyway. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
