Nail Gun Saftey

( That doesn't sound very likely to me. I don't see how anyone can shoot a 3" nail up into their head like that and not know it, unless ofcourse they were brain dead already. Or maybe they just couldn't tell anyone about it because their tongue was nailed to the roof of their mouth. )

I remember hearing about this guy. He claims he honestly didn't know it until he got a toothache or something like that. I forget what it was. But supposedly he did go 2 or 3 days with it in there before he went to the hospital. Me, on the other hand, I get a little splinter in my hand and I'll drop everything I'm doing and run to find the tweezers so that I can get it out ASAP. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I tagged my ring finger from about 2 feet with a 3 1/2" ardox.

I had gloves on too. I thought, like you, it went clean through the bone and I have a scar exactly mid-bone on both sides of the finger.

Anyhow, I couldn't take my glove off because of the nail, so I took the nail out. To my utter amazement, it appeared the nail skipped over the bone, and lifted the skin and went over the top. So, although the finger was tender for a while there was no real damage to the finger and I was able to keep working till it got dark.

Pity I don't have any photos /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif but I do have a cool through-n-through scar. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Wouldn't that just be considered a Texas splinter! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Luckily my nail gun hasn't taken a piece of me yet.

I was taking off a long sleeve shirt when helping a neighbor w/ some fencing.. my shirt sleeve snagged on something near my wrist. I was like.. "What is this?" I kept pulling and wire kept coming out.. it was about 2 inches long & wavy.. then I remembered.. I was using a high speed grinder w/ a wire brush attachment earlier that morning. Never even felt it.. but it did convince me to always wear my safety glasses!

You've sure got that right, Ken. I've used wire wheels on bench grinders a great deal; marvelous tool. But I've picked enough of those wires out of my shirt that there's no way I'd go near one without eye protection.

The worst nail gun incident I have heard of was from a fella working on building our house...

He told of someone he once worked with was trying to get a stuck air hose off the nailer, so he put the nail gun between his legs so he could work on the hose with both hands!

I don't think I have to tell everyone what happened next... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

A high school friend of mine was building a house with her husband. After lunch he got back to work before she did, and fired a 3 1/2" nail through a knot in a 2x4 and hit her between the nose and eye from about 20' away. She didn't have her safety glasses back on yet. At the emergency room they took x-rays, filled her with pain killers, and just jerked it out. The only permanent damage was some numb patches on her face and scalp due to nerve damage. Bad accident, but it could have been much worse!

Wear your safety glasses!

Mike

I must have 15 pair, probably more. I put and leave them with all of my tools. I was born with one of everything and intend to die that way. Gerard
