I'll follow the thread. I use one of those cheap stethoscopes several times a month listening to bearings at my job. I will say, its cheap and the ear pieces are uncomfortable, but for four bucks its a bargain!

Well I spent quite a bit of time listening using the stick method and the sound is not coming from the engine (slight rod knock though) The pin came out of the govenor linkage and the tractor reved way up and shut off before I could get to the switch. The ballast resistor is gone not sure why that would burn out at the high rev but maybe I am lucky it did? Not sure if any other damage was done. I will have to pick it up next week when I get the seal for the brakes. hopefully that is all the damage the high rpm did. I will let you guys know when I get it running again. The sound was happening less and less so maybe it will remedy as the tractor runs. I dont think the last owner used it much as it was really not fit for use.

I got the parts and worked the tractor for a couple of hours. I cannot hear the noise anymore. I suspect that the position it was in when I shut it down to do the brakes must have been part of the issue. once I got it moving and warmed up it is not making the noise at least I cannot hear it from the drivers seat. I did order the stethoscope. once I get the stethoscope I will listen again thanks you all for your help. The tractor is running quite well now. thank you
