It was one day after my 16th birthday as birthday fell on a Sunday.

For me it was Grandma’s 4 door 1972 Buick Skylark with 350 ci motor…

Hayward California…
I took my drivers license test in 1968 using my mom's 1961 Chevy station wagon:

Ironically, there was an abandoned 61 wagon, very much like it, on the first piece of property I bought 10 years later.
Trees had grown up around it making it difficult to remove. It can't be seen from the house or road so I just left it there. Every time I take a hike back in the woods, I see it there rusting away and it brings back many happy memories.

I took the test and passed on my 16th birthday, 1975, in my Mom's 1972 Mustang notchback, 6 cylinder, auto. It is in the garage, behind the 1973 Honda Civic in the photo. The 73 Civic was the first car I ever legally (and I use that term loosely) drove on the street after getting my license.

My neighbor born in 1924 showed he his first license signed by the nearest city Chief of Police… he was 12 and the driver’s license granted him permission to drive the farm truck for farm purposes as his father had a farm accident and could no longer drive… he was the oldest of 8 children.

I guess things were different back then?

1975 or 1976 Ford Country Squire Station wagon.
Brown with fake wood trim and handling that was a challenge even on the highway.
Had the 351 so it could move faster than you could keep control.
I remember it squealing tires doing 45 on a 55 mph road that was twisty.

The car I learned to drive in drivers ed was a cavalier, slow junk.

Quite the difference going between cars, think I had about an hour of driving in the wagon, which had been my grandfathers and was now my brothers.

A month later both rear shocks broke and it was towed home. The shocks were the cheapest my grandfather could buy and had probably 6 months of light use on them. Fun during the drivers test as the rear would hop a lot, who knows what kind of leaf springs were back there.

53 Ford Pickup. Drove myself 15 miles to town for the test. 4 dry rotted tires and only two wheels with brakes. Wheel cylinders blown on the other two so I just ran a screw in the brake lines to get by on. 😂
