My first W2 job was washing cars all day every Saturday at a car dealership age 13…

It was not long before I was fetching keys for customers and soon moving cars around the lot…
I had a similar job, paid under the table, though. Dad's friends had a small used car dealership. I had to clean out the trade-ins....gross 95% of the time. I got to keep any money I found, plus they paid me some cash.

The fun part was when they went to Mpls for the auto auction. I got to drive cars back. Did I mention they sold a lot of muscle type cars? I got to drive a '76 Z back the 4 hours home. I had to stop and pee, so to catch up to the group, I had to 'test' the top end...very fun car to drive.

Please indulge me in some questions, I'm not familiar with the process for obtaining a motorcycle driver license. Are you saying that, if you get a motorcycle license, you are automatically allowed to use that license for driving a car?

Also, how do they handle the driving exam, does the examiner actually ride on the back of the motorcycle with you (I can't imagine they would do that)?
Can't answer your first question, but, at least here in N.H. in the early 70s when I got my motorcycle endorsement there were some cones set up in a parking lot and the examiner just watched you. Given how closely spaced the cones were, it was a rather slow speed course, I felt bad for the guys trying to take it with Harleys or other big bikes. I just had a dirtbike at the time and aced it.

I'm not real sure it was supposed to convert to a car license honestly. When I got it renewed the first time I noticed it was renewed as a car license and not a motorcycle one. I went back and told them the issue and when they "fixed" it, they gave me back a car license with a motorcycle endorsement, I didn't complain that time.

They just watched me ride in a parking lot. Straight line, and a figure 8 using blinkers.

Yep… lunch money from under the back seat was smitten a race to get there first.

There were days when business on the trade in side was really good.

More than a few times I cleaned up a morning trade, did the brake and smog check and sold that afternoon.

Mine was a 1974 Chevy Camaro with a 350 V8. That was my first car and the only car I have ever owned until this year when I bought a commuter car to drive to work and keep mileage off my truck.

It was one day after my 16th birthday as birthday fell on a Sunday.

For me it was Grandma’s 4 door 1972 Buick Skylark with 350 ci motor…

Hayward California…

My mother's 1987 Pontiac Grand Am. Had a 4-banger, was typical GM junk of the era, but at 16 who cares?

Didn't have to take a driving test because I got a waiver from the Driver's Ed instructor. ;)

Haha, one of my first cars was a Pinto! In retrospect, kind of glad; if I had had some of my later cars(Roadrunner, Trans Am), probably would have wound up wrapped around a tree of worse...

At least my Pinto had a 4-speed and the gas tank retro protector. A guy I work with grew up at the same time; he had his Dads Pinto wagon with an automatic. Talk about Low Performance!

This is the airplane I used for my private pilot flight test on December 10, 1977, a 1976 Piper Cherokee 140.

It is apparently still registered and has a little over 4,800 hours now, although it was new when I was renting it. This might actually belong in the "You Know You Are Old" thread...
