The CIO is deeply suspicious of surveys like this. We got one from NY State wanting to know some very intimate details about our horse boarding business. The thought is that some kind of fees and / or taxation will follow. There was also a deep concern over the proposed (but now cancelled?) animal tagging requirements (brought on by mad cow tracking activity) that would include horses, and how we would be subject to fees on initial entry into the program, maybe yearly 'ID checks' and maybe ID checks every time a horse was moved (we go trail riding and to several horse shows every year); not to mention the question about how the tag would look on a show horse's ear (or pay more for an implant). Probably would end up showing on our EZ Pass statement when we drove the horse trailer through the toll booth.

If the farmers ever got together to make a union, it would be 227 times the size of the teamsters. So anytime we get a chance to be noticed, we should take it.

If the farmers ever got together to make a union, it would be 227 times the size of the teamsters. So anytime we get a chance to be noticed, we should take it.

I don't think there's anything conspiritorial about it either. I'd be just as irritated if a private entity came along and threatened to 'answer or else.' If it was a voluntary survey then I might have filled it out.

My first one was misplaced. Found it one day and then in the mail the next day, they had sent me another one. I guess I will fill one of them out.

I don't have any livestock but at the Farm Show I picked up some brochures on NASS. They where hyping that the reason for the registration was to control animal disease outbreaks which sounds reasonable....

But it seems like to control that you would just need to know which farms are in a given area and not every single animal. Think of the paperwork that would have to be done every time an animal was sold/moved/died/eaten. If you raised chickes to eat, and killed one for the Sunday dinner, you would have to fill out a form. If a Fox got a chicken, fill out a form.

How much would it cost to have all of the data entry? What a dumb dumb dumb idea.

I can see the problem that can occur if a Cow is sold from Farm A, at an auction house B, to Farm C. And if the cow is sick you might need to find every animal it came in contact. Sure seems like the auction house would be the place to keep the data.

The info I picked up did not make any sense to me at all.
