Hello, I have a 70's John Deere 300 fires right up then rough idle and dead throttle after a few minutes it stalls out. Blows alot of white smoke. Changed injectors and noticed there was alot of junk in the sediment bowl.

I am sure this would be my problem here but what exactly is this and how would i clean it all out? Taking my fuel tank would be to difficult.

Thank You!
Have A Great Day. 20200628_210427.jpeg20200628_210356.jpeg20200628_205554.jpeg

Can you access the tank drain cock? If so, disconnect the fuel line to the fuel filter and drain the tank. Reinstall the cock put in some new fuel, take a stick and through the fill port of the tank, slosh things around and drain that. Continue till clear. Clean up your fuel lines to and around the filter, install a new filter, fill the tank with fresh fuel, bleed the line to the pump, and the pump if necessary, and if necessary, the fuel lines at the injectors and be on your way.

I will drain this and add new. I did that last time with only the 5 gallons that was in there. All that seemed to come out was clean fuel. Do you know what this is? Should i put something in the fuel after cleaning the tank out???

Although it doesn't look like diesel bugs (algae) as it's usually black and stringy looking, I think I'd be putting some biocide in there after thoroughly cleaning the tank and complete fuel system . Looks like rusty water which is a good breeding ground for the nasty critters............Mike

It looks like rust to me. If fuel tank is often left low in fuel and is over 40 years old possible. Also water in fuel, sweating, will cause rust also. I have no better suggestion than to fill the fuel tank and keep it full. Do what Texasmark recommended.

Just looks like water/condensation. Drain thoroughly, add clean, fresh fuel and add a diesel fuel conditioner. Some of that may have gotten forward into then system, so you may have to do it a few times.

Conventional wisdom posted here says not to leave a metal tank less than full if it's going to sit any extended period of time. A full tank is less prone to condensation.

Run your fuel threw a Mr. Funnel. Clean your bowl and put it back in.

You all are correct. I have learned the hard way... the fuel gauge does not work so unfortunate & Embarrassing. I have ran it out of fuel more than a hand full of times. I have heard its the worst thing you can do for a diesel... so i will drain this out. Fill up with more get a vacuu. Tube and try sucking out the bottom and will just fill it all the way to the top and keep it full!!
