Not only are "databases" difficult to talk with, but even those in the same agency may not talk, let alone DIFFERENT agencies and/or organizations.
I think people have seen too many movies that portray some massive, all encompassing, all knowing govt database that will know everything about everyone. As Mike Z notes, the govt can't even compile a centralized terrorist watch list that all agencies can use, so a national identity database is someone's pipe dream. The technical challenges of such a database are large enough, but when you add in the turf battles that would have to be fought...not gonna happen.

Web sites like unrealid are not going to generate much traffic by taking the position that this is not technically realistic. Their purpose is to stir things up. Just more raw meat for the black helicopter, Area 71 crowd. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Agreed, But I also believe that IT people vastly underestimate the risk of that information getting into the hands of people who want it for other purposes.

With the HIPAA and Sarbannes-Oxley legislation, IT people better start paying attention to it or they're going to be in big civil and/or criminal trouble.

I am more worried about corporate repositories of information getting hacked, than I am U.S. government.

Witness the lastest round of "identity" thefts these last few months.

At least if the government has it, you know it will be difficult to get! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I agree. If someone wants the info they will get it. In theroy it is good but with every electronic devices, someone WILL find a way around it; it is human nature.

Our “freedom” is dwindling down every so slowly.

I've got a national ID card also.... USAF (ret.) No big deal. You would think it's 31 Dec 1999 and tomorrow the world will grind to a halt thanks to the fear mongering. The only person who needs fear a national ID card is the illegal alien and the crook who lives by ID theft.

just think about it Mike. Eveytime something "good" steps in, we loose a small piece of it. Then we need to do something else (another law) for a correct action.

Also I would think you would give "uncle sam" more credit then that on IT info. I am not saying they are the best in the world but I do give them credit where credit is due. You think the huge data base in a pipe dream. I do not think it is a dream but coming down the road. Just like 25 years ago the internet was a dream (not thanks to the militray) and the personal PC for under $2000 was a pipe dream 40 years ago...and the list goes on and on.

The short coming of HIPAA, as I understand it, it that it only relates to health information that is "electronicaly transmitted", while Sarbanes-Oxley addresses financial data, and assigning accountability for its accuracy. My opinion is that both of these measures really only spell out "best practices" that companies should have been following all along.
Besides, the laws haven't stopped hackers from getting into the banks and credit card companies.
