Poking around I found something on the internet that said that Porcupines crave salt and certain building material treatments that seem like salt to them.

Yep. Apparently the glue that's used in plywood is one of them.
I maintain communications equipment, and one of my clients has a plywood building on a mountaintop that porcupines (and squirrels) love. Porcupines came in underneath and chewed several holes in the floor, fortunately none of them under the equipment. We ended up siding the building with metal roofing, and made sure the bottom end was several inches underground. No problems since (knock knock).

mom back there at cabin, and told me she saw, a ground squirrel come across and set on the roof. along with a frog of all things as well on the roof.

looking at some youtube videos.... rat traps slightly modified for squirrels, (wire / string attached to trap so trap does not get dragged off) one person added a few extra nails to end. to using a milk jug to other jugs. filling with water, and turning them upside down and letting the water gargle out into the hole of ground squirrels and watching the squirrels shoot up into the bottles. to live traps.

peanut butter, apples, and peanuts themselves used as bait.

might save a few milk jugs / laundry detergent jugs. along with see if i can adjust weight, of a couple live traps i have. and see what happens.

==========
i am still having hard time with porcupines. never have seen one let alone on road dead. plenty of other animals though. exception in a zoo.

Squirrels would be the most likely culprit, rabbits would be next.

Never heard of rabbits or squirrels doing that kind of damage. I had problems with squirrels, running rampant in my barn and yard. They chew a hole to get in, but don't do wide spread damage. Which is what I thought he was saying, maybe I am wrong though.

Porcupine was my first guess. I figured they would have them down there, I thought they were common all over. But maybe not.

I'd look for poop, that may be the best indicator.

Just because she saw one, doesn't mean much. I see all kinds of animals

Never heard of the word nauled before. Not sure if it is supposed to be some kind of local joke.

she is normally one at cabin. fishing / swimming / etc... with other family / friends. after speaking with my mom a bit more ground squirrels are in large amount in the area around the cabin / shed.

for now will place bet, on ground squirrels. and will place porcupines on the lower list, until i actually see / catch one.
