Navy Warship number, but what's the name?

Re: Navy Warship number, but what\'s the name?

They've done an outstanding job with the Yorktown at Patriots Point. I don't recall the names but they also have a WWII Destroyer, diesel sub and a Coast Guard Cutter that are also on exhibit there and in good condition. I doubt these old battle wagons will ever see sea duty again.

I've seen that Naval yard you posted about. Do you recall seeing the USS FDR come cruising in for decommisioning around 1977/78? I was on her last Med cruise.

hull numbers are type-specific, so two ships could have the same hull number as long as they are different types of ships.

This is what I was trying to say to begin with , belive it or not... just couldn't spit it out onto the keyboard !

I remember when we were in Ft. Lauderdale. We were actually anchored out though and had to take liberty boats into port. Who knows I might have bumped into you that day.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I believe a decommissioned ship still retains its hull number. Only after the ship is stricken from the naval record does the hull number become free. Of course, hull numbers are type-specific, so two ships could have the same hull number as long as they are different types of ships.

I was stationed in Phladelphia during the late 70s and was Assistant Disposal Officer at the Naval Inactive Ships Facility there. We sold many old Fletcher class destroyers, the air craft carriers, Randolph and Essex, and the hospital ship USS Hope. There were many others, but those were the most memorable. It was a fun and educational tour of duty.

I believe all ships that are memorials actually remain the property of the US Navy. The cities with these agree to maintain the ships in good material condition in case the Navy wants them back. I'm afraid that requirement isn't always met though. Many years ago, I was really disappointed by the Battleship Texas near San Jacinto, but I've been told it has since been restored and is again a proud memorial. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Yeah, the Philly Navy Yard was a great source of Philly pride. It's right across I-95 from the sports satdiums and you fly right over it when you land in Philly Int. Airport. Now it's called the "Aker Shipyard". They build a few cargo ships there and there's still the Des Moines and a few other gunships just sittin there. They look really loney. Place is nothing like it used to be.

I wouldn't be too sure about that. During Desert Storm they pulled the Battleships out of the mothballs and laid some serious wood to the Iraqis. Gotta love those Big Guns ! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Navy Warship number, but what\'s the name?

Jim, When I was in the Naval Reserves I used to work on the Battle Ship Texas. It was the only time I felt like I was doing anything of value in the reserves. It was a fine ship, and it has been restored. I'm sorry to say I haven't been back to see it yet.

One of the most moving feelings I ever experienced was when I stepped aboard the USS Missouri when it was mothballed in Bremerton, WA. That ship was awesome. When I heard they were recommisioning it in the early 80's, I almost re-enlisted to serve on it. Almost /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
